The Scary Mommy: Blog Power

November 21, 2011 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 3 Comments

Scary Mommy is a parenting blog written by Jill Smokler, she tackles everything from raising kids, to stretch marks, to affairs, to asking mistresses to write in and give their side of the story,  and that is only in the last few weeks.

On November 13, Jill wrote a blog post about how much she enjoyed Thanksgiving Dinner with her family, and then went on to say that with the downturn in the economy many of her readers could not afford food on a regular day much less on Thanksgiving. Jill’s idea was that the average Thanksgiving meal cost $43.00, if people would donate $25.00 she could match up two readers with one mom in need.

The idea took off and as of today she has raised $20,000! Well over 900 people left comments pledging money, enough to feed roughly 438 families! Not everyone donated $25.00, some donated less, can you imagine that in your own time of struggle and need you give your last dollar to someone in need?

I am grateful for Scary Mommy’s post because we are all at different places in our lives, and sometimes blog land makes everything look sunny and perfect, when in fact there are many people struggling with no jobs, no homes, and no money, not to mention illness in the family, aging parents, special needs children and many other daily challenges. I am thankful for my husband, my dog Munchen, family, friends, my life and all of the advantages that I have and I pray that those who are struggling will find the help and strength they need to get through these hard times.

As those of us in America get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving and many around the world Christmas and Huanaka, let us remember that “One person can change the world” we can all make a difference in someone lives. Let us reach out and do our part whatever that may be.

BROVO SCARY MOMMY!
