Mappetite and Story Corps

Hello! How was your weekend? Mine was busy, I managed to finally get all of my “work” done, the Christmas decorations are down and put away for another year, the mail is sorted, shredded and recycled, and the bags and boxes are unpacked. Sadly, the laundry is not finished yet, nor is all of the “stuff” from all of the boxes put away. I guess that will be my after work project for next week.

It was not all work for me this weekend, I did find time for my favorite entertainment. I know a lot of us love PBS and NPR, for quality programs, like Downton Abbey or Upstairs Downstairs or to listen to Story Corps or the Splendid Table, this weekend was no exception. On The Splendid Table I learned a few great recipes and about a cool new product, it is called Mappetite.

Mappetite is maps for food lovers; for now San Francisco, London and New York are the only ones available, Paris( I am waiting for this one) and Chicago are to follow soon.

These interesting and cool maps fold like a regular map but also have little neighborhood parts that open up, and each area showcases the best bakeries, food stores and restaurants in different neighborhoods. Doesn’t this sound cool? What I love about these maps, is that the authors do not take any payback to feature any of these restaurants, must do food shops or bakeries and they update the maps and their web page frequently. I love museums and landmarks but I have to honest, I love visiting bakeries and food stores! That is one of my favorite things to do in any city I visit. Food is my number one souvenir.

And on PBS last night, a bonus, a rerun of Downton Abbey! A tiny fix until the year 2013.  And a great animated program of  Story Corps. Are you familiar with Story Corps?

“Story Corps is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.”

If you are not familiar Story Corps you must tune in to NPR, or download a podcast. The stories are the everyday  loves, adventures, trial’s, tribulations and lives of people all over the country. Since 2003, 40,000 stories have been recorded and archived in the Library of Congress. Everyone has a story…you can even record yours!  Go to the link above for more information on this fascinating project and perhaps make reservations to record your own story.

I hope you have a very happy Monday and a great week! I am looking forward to hearing all about your weekend!

    Goodness, you sound busy.
I'm hoping to go to New York in November, I've never been before, so it's an awfully big adventure for me. I'm going to look out for the New York Mappetite, it's such a fantastic idea, and like you I really believe you can find so much about a place from it's food. And even though I'm a native, I may get the London one as well!
    Have a great week

    Elizabeth, I thought about
you as I devoured a couple
    of BBC productions since
    D.A. wrapped up…..The first
    one was "Wives and Daughters"
and the second is "Daniel Deronda."
There are actors from D.A. in both,
    plus other wonderful ones! They
were both on Netflix instant download.
Next up is "The Forsythe Saga."

    Wanted to add that I
    loved hearing about
    both your new discoveries
    and will explore both.
    Like you, I prefer the
    off-the-beaten path
    food places!

    Happy Monday,
    xx Suzanne

    Hi Elizabeth,
I just got back from visiting my daughter in San Francisco, one of the best cities for food in the country. I wish I had known about the Mappetite for my trip, though we went to some great restaurants. Palomasea and I are obviously on the same schedule. I will start working on my "tag" post now that I'm back. I think it will be fun. Thanks for all the great info this post contained. I know you will enjoy the "DA" rerun! I may watch it myself. Have a wonderful week and welcome home!
    xx Sunday
