Real Christmas Tree or Artificial?

November 15, 2012 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 14 Comments

Good morning!

Country Living

Now that I started the ball rolling here with some Christmas gift and cookie ideas I was curious do you have a real Christmas tree or artificial?

Stylish Eve

And do you decorate it the same each year, have a theme or change things up yearly?

Country Living

I am sorry to report that I am an artificial tree lover. I would love to have a real tree but sadly I put mine up so early that by the time Christmas rolled around there would not be a needle left.

Country Living

In fact that happened one year at my mothers, two days before Christmas we woke up to find all of the ornaments broken and scattered on the ground and about two feet of pine needles on the floor. We rushed out to Marshall Fields and bought one of the floor models complete with decorations.

Country Living

I love tradition, and reminiscing about the ornaments, where they came from, who gave them to me and for many years had the same tree.

But the last few years I have been trying something new. New colors, new ornaments, new decorations, the works.

I have also branched out, no pun intended to, many small trees instead of just one large one.

Better Homes and Gardens

This year I have 4, 4 foot trees and 3, 2.5 foot trees and each will be decorated to correspond to the room it is in.

I have not started decorating yet as I have to dig all of my stuff out. To be honest though, I always decorate on the day after Thanksgiving.

That way I can relax and enjoy my trees while I spend the rest of the month baking!

OK, enough about me, what sort of tree do you have, when do you put it up and how do you decorate?

I have many friends that wait until the day or week before the holidays but I could never do that; I love the season so much I want to make it last as long as possible.

I would love to hear about your trees and see your decorations and ideas.

I am compiling a list of the shops that you emailed to me or left in the comments yesterday. Thank you! I think it is wonderful to support our blog friends.

Have a fabulous day!

I rather fancy your idea of having more than one tree – it solves the angst which usually goes into deciding which theme or colour scheme for the year. I don't like plastic trees unless they are done with wit, but am partial to the vintage aluminium ones. (Yes, no consistency in my logic I know.) Love trees made from anything other than what is expected – and of course love all living trees.

We do the real tree – but sometimes have to have 2. Luckily our next door neighbours sell them

Interesting topic…this year I am thinking of a really tall tree and realize that a "good fake" one would in the long run be a good investment but I do love real and but a real one every year, something about that smell is intoxicating to me and fills the house…plus I have to admit I love all the pagentry involved in going and picking the tree, I try to make it on a day or night when its cold enough to really "feel" the season:) But must admit good fake trees have never looked, well so real!

    Good morning gorgeous!

I have always been (during my marriage) an artificial tree owner only because of our lack of space (for the most part, college dorms and small apartments and a small home!) and now that our house is much larger, I still have not opted for a real tree. However, I love the organic element about the house and last year I purchased some awesome curly willow that I branch out onto a tree form. I LOVE IT. I put lights and hang my glittered birds and there you have it. Instant charm.

I WANT TO SEE PHOTOS OF YOUR TREE! I will see what I can do around here after this art show is over; I haven't had a chance to decorate or clean!!!! LOVE TO YOU, Anita

    Hi Elizabeth,
As you know, we don't have a lot of room but we do enjoy a real tree every year. We buy a 3ft potted tree that will sit on our chart table in the pilot house. There are windows all around so it can be seen by all. Then when Christmas is done we gift the tree to a friends garden. I am a Chistmas nut so no doubt, decoration will commence soon 🙂

    Happy Thursday dear friend.

I do love a real tree and had one last year, but never again. Too messy for me and I got tired of watering it and then it was very brittle by Christmas anyway. I am going much smaller this year with an artificial tree on a table instead of climbing up and down a ladder for the tall one. I just don't want to do that anymore. I will have small trees scattered like you.

    Hi Elizabeth –

It was nice to wake up and see all your pretty trees!! I am struggling with moving on to the holidays after the storm (somehow missing Halloween makes me think it's still mid-October). Your holiday cheer is putting me into the spirit.

I keep trying to get an artificial tree, but my family won't stand for it. They insist on a real tree every year especially my husband, which is funny because he is Jewish!! I do two trees – a big one and a small one in my kids' play rooom (even though they aren't kids any more!).

Elizabeth you really go all out; your home should be on a Holiday Tour!

I am in a small condo so I will do a table top tree with a lot of copper, gold, and cream . I have given my daughter the ornaments from over the years when she was a child and so my grandchildren get to enjoy them!

Artificial trees have come a long way and there are so many really pretty ones 🙂 I'm a traditionalist and living in the pacific northwest, we have lots of forest/tree farms. We usually cut our own so it's very fresh and lasts until we take it down. As far as decorating, as much as I'd like to change the theme every year, my family likes things to remain predictable 🙂 I've got everything on my tree.. even the little kid/hand-made ornaments.

We got rid of our 10ft. artifical tree about 3 years ago and have been purchasing real ever since. There is something about opening up that door every evening and coming in to the fresh scent of a Christmas tree. That feeling just cant be replaced. We do plan to add a few little trees next year when we have some more room in the new home. Have a great day! – Tonya

There's nothing like a real tree. We use a real one, but we buy it alive in a pot and after Christmas we move it in the garden :).

I've had both: real and artificial trees. They are making artificial trees so well these days…..I don't mind them. But, I do love the smell of real trees though!! We'll be getting a small but real tree this year 🙂

I go for artificial tree. My family and I, just like you would love to enjoy all the Christmas decorations as long as we can. We usually start decorating on the last week of November. So we have at least one month to enjoy the Christmas decorations.
