Little Free Library

I am sure that if you have read this blog for any length of time you know that next to sugar and cheese, books are one of my favorite things in the world. Free books rate even higher.

Recently, while visiting my mom I noticed several little bird house like structures dotting peoples front lawns near the sidewalk; upon closer inspection I found out they are libraries. From the non-profit group called Little Free Library.

What are Little Free Libraries?

Are you familiar with them? The idea was conceived in Hudson, Wisconsin by Todd Bol. Bol built a little library in the shape of a schoolhouse to honor his mother who was a book lover and a teacher and mounted it on his front lawn.

Together with his partner Rick Brooks they founded Little Free Library.

  • To nurture a love of reading.
  • Create community.
  • Recycle books and other reading material.

How To Find a Little Free Library Location

These little libraries are sprouting up all over the world and in fact are in 36 countries. Little Free Library has surpassed it’s goal to build more libraries than Andrew Carnegie and this year reached 5000!

To find a library near you,you can search the local Little Free Library Map. Simply click your location and zoom in on the map until you reach your area. You can also search by ZIP code, city, state, country, or library name.

How To Build Your Own Little Free Library

Anyone can build a little library, you can start with a kit or make your own. The Little Free Library organization sells kits and offers blueprints as well. But you can also design your own, you are only limited by your imagination. Your library can be as simple as a box on a post or as elaborate as a fairy castle.

  • Find a location and be sure to register it with Little Free Library so that book lovers can find you.
  • If you live in a planned community check with your HOA. It is also a good idea to check with your city to see if they are allowed and where they can be located.
  • Design your library and gather your materials.
  • New or recycled materials can be used.
  • Be sure the structure can withstand the elements, you don’t want your books to get wet.
  • Add instructions so that people who change upon your library know what it is.
  • Stock your library with books, include some of your favorites and your children favorite too!

Do you have a Little Free Library in your neighborhood? Or your own yard? We don’t have a library at our house, the HOA does not allow them, but we do add books to the library in the park and in the village.

You can help foster a life long love of reading and learning by building or sharing your books why not start with a clear out today!

THAT’S ALL FOR NOW
