Downton Abbey Finale

February 18, 2013 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 12 Comments

Oh my goodness!!! Sorry, I mean good morning and Happy Presidents Day. I hope you had a good weekend.

Now, get a cup of coffee or a cocoa and lets discuss the final episode of Downton Abbey Season 3. What did you think? I am still trying to process the ending. If you did not watch I will not spoil it but I will say that it is a shocker.

I loved the change of scenery, the Highlands of Scotland and frankly the bagpiper; I do not know if I would like it each morning at 8:00 am but I did enjoy it on this episode.

I do wish that for once Edith would find a young, single man instead of the old, or married or injured ones that she keeps coming up with. Surely in the whole of the UK there is one?

I thought it was nice to see a little more going on downstairs beside work. The fair and the day off was a welcome change.

What did you think about Mrs. Patmour? And Dr. Clarkson and Isobel courting?

And Rose? Are you happy with this new addition to the cast? I think I will reserve judgement for now. Although I will say that the spoiled/wild child story line needs to evolve into something else hopefully sooner rather than later.

I know that it is only a TV show, but I like so many have become attached to it. There is something about this show, aside from the beautiful scenery, fairy tale house, and quality writing, that has brought people to their TV on Sunday evening in droves. I am going to miss it and I do not think that I can wait another year!

I know that a lot more happened in the episode but I do not want to take up your whole day. I would love to know what you thought.

And tell me, do you think you will be watching Mr. Selfridge?

Enjoy your day!

Ah yes…let's chat. Well, Ruben had bought the DVD set of the entire season, so we watched ALL of the episodes TWICE in the last month. Last night, we invited some friends over for tea and to watch the DVD and the last episode, to see their reaction. All I can say is that when I watched the finale the first and second time last night, my heart sank. Our guest was sick in heart.

I love this show. And I love that it has brought millions to their TVs all around the country and abroad. Not since TV first was invented has a show done this, I wonder? You fall in love with the characters, you care for them, you laugh with them and cry. I think all the transitions with Rose entering the scene and so on, are so important for the "changing of the guard", so to speak. Exquisite costumes and settings and superb writing brought to us with fine acting makes for what storytelling was meant to do: to lift the audience to another realm of experiencing life.

We are so hooked on British lit, comedy and drama. We do live in a world MADE IN ENGLAND.

That ending!!! Omgosh! I was definitely shocked. And now we have to wait another year 🙁

But I agree: the change of scenery in Scotland was divine. So stately and beautiful.

Loi, I agree the change of scenery was wonderful. Scotland is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been and I enjoy it more and more every time I visit.

I hope you have a great week!

I can't even talk about the ending last night…it's just wrong (although I know why it happened). I hate having to wait another year for the next season!

I cannot either!!!! I am sad to see so many of the "regular" cast leaving to pursue other opportunities. It is just so difficult to find quality TV. I cannot believe that we have to wait a year!

    Hello Elizabeth

We love Downton Abbey. It is so well written and the actors are superb. Hopefully Hollywood will see that we enjoy intelligence, beauty and violence is unnecesary. I hope we see more movies along the lines of Downton Abbey. It reminds me of the Merchant Ivory movies.

    Have a great week

I dvr'd the episode and have watched it several times since Sunday night. I am profoundly saddened and a wee bit angry. It is difficult to lose one essential character…now we have lost two:(. On a more positive note, I loved the utter delight on Mr. Bate's face as he watched Anna dancing. Perhaps we have all been mistaken in thinking that the Mary/Matthew love story is at the nexus of the series. Perhaps it is Anna/John instead. Never-the-less, I have heard that the series will resume six months after Matthew's demise. I would have appreciated an opportunity to attend his funeral. This is going to be so hard. At least we in America were spared the agony of having to watch this episode on Christmas Day.

I was very saddened by the episode, ( I was suspecting something like that) though it does leave open a myriad of possibilities for Downton. I truly enjoyed all of the filming in the gorgeous Scottish countryside, a real treat after so much of England. I have to say, I hope Edith gets her life turned around. She is becoming whiny and pathetic which does not suit her otherwise independent character.
One of the sweetest most heart-warming couples on the series is easily Anna and Mr. Bates. As I watched her dance for him, my heart melted.

The Scottish countryside…it is like a dream….you are so fortunate to have seen it for yourself…
    Hello, dear friend!
We have been having such internet issues, but it looks like we're back on track for now…
The blizzard came and went, but another round is expected on Monday!
    How are YOU?
Well, I was naughty, and checked the spoilers before the episode aired (I did not want to face another Sybil-style surprise)…
    Nevertheless, I still cried!
    Love to you,
    – Irina

We’ve had a lazy start to the weekend, it was raining when we woke up and that did not inspire me to hop out of bed to work around the house or the yard. Now the sun is shining and I am feeling so relaxed I don’t want to go outside. I’ve been perusing Pinterest and Instagram and there is so much inspiration for Spring and summer. I want to repaint a few rooms in the house(even through I don’t like painting) I want to plant a huge garden and have a wildflower meadow, I’ve found at least 30 recipes to try and I want to order at least 10 dresses from various stores.
