Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday or Pancake Day

February 12, 2013 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 7 Comments

Good morning! Happy Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, and Pancake Day.

Fluffy Pancakes made by me. Recipe Here

Traditionally the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is the last hurrah for people before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. They eat rich and fatty foods before the Lenten Season, during which time many follow the rituals of fasting and abstinence for 40 days.

For many people in England, Canada and Australia, Pancake Day was a way to use up decadent pantry items which were not permitted during Lent. Eggs, butter, and milk used to be forbidden during the abstinence of Lent but I believe that changed in 1983(don’t quote me on that).

In Milwaukee, where I grew up they celebrate by eating packzi.  These sweet and rich donuts which are filled with prunes, jams or custard and sprinkled with powdered sugar are a Polish specialty.

Do you celebrate Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday or Pancake Day? Or perhaps some other tradition? I would love to learn about your family traditions or special recipes. If you have a link to something you posted please leave it in the comment section and I will add it to this post if you like.

Enjoy your day!

Good morning dearest! I on the contrary do NOT like heavy pancakes! We never celebrated this tradition, my family being nominal Catholics! But ENJOY YOURSELF and it is always good to see you post. Anta

Mmmmm! I love Shrove Tuesday, I'm making my batter. So my daughter can have pancakes for her tea, then we'll have some for supper later. I'll probably eat plenty as tomorrow is a fast day! Jude x

Yep! I married a New Orleans native so we do celebrate Mardi Gras. They're having a pancake dinner at church tonight, but I don't think we're going because it's going to be pouring down rain.

Your pancakes with the strawberries on the GORGEOUS plates are such a pretty picture. 😀

We make them at home very rarely…but oh are they good…
    Happy Mardi Gras, my dear!
