Words and Letterpress Blocks

March 4, 2013 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 7 Comments

“Words are the voice of the heart.” ~ Confucius

Good morning. I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful weekend. I did, although I miss watching Downton Abbey on Sunday evening. Oddly enough it seemed as if that program signaled the end of the weekend and the start of a new and promising week.

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”Josh Billings

Oh well, I will have to find other things to occupy my time, perhaps with the letterpress blocks I found last week on my visit to Chicago. I have mentioned before that age is making me nostalgic, in addition to changing my tastes and interests. These blocks are not something that I collect but I was drawn to them.

“Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace.” Buddha

Perhaps it is the fact that some days, although I enjoy this blog and have lots to say about all sorts of things that are probably only interesting to me, I cannot put two letters together to form a word much less a complete sentence.

“Colors fade, temples crumble, empires fall, but wise words endure.” ~Edward Thorndike

Or simply the fact that I am curious as to what interesting words and paragraphs were formed with these words and symbols. Or could it be that the patina of age and days gone by was calling out to me on that day?

“The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do.”
– Thomas Jefferson

I am not sure what the reason but this box of letters came home with me last week and I am fascinated by them. There are letters, words such as “per” and “for”, symbols, & and $ and even images of pointing hands and a few I have yet to determine. A little gold mine of letters.

Have you come home recently with any finds that you would not normally? Are you a collector? What are your favorite things to collect? Textiles, books, transferware, tartan ware?

If you have some of your collection featured on your blog please leave me a link, I would enjoy seeing it.

Enjoy your day!

P.S. It is Words Matter Week 2013.

Oh, no truer words have been said about anyone aspiring to be a good writer; to hid himself/herself in the ink and let the letters do the talking. Oh yes!

Well my dear, these are fabulous finds. Preservation of the old ways is a good thing. Keep them, and think about the possibilities they once held and printed. I collect crowns, and have kept my collection of other things more now in my MEMORY in order to write. ENJOY YOUR DAY! Anita

I love your block letters and they are interesting maybe you can block out a little saying in your kitchen or bath. You already know about my collections, tassels and textiles so no surprise there. Glad you had a nice weekend mine was so relaxing that I almost don't want to move today.

They are wonderful. I too would be contemplating how these were used and what they created in days gone by. I've always been hoping to come across an old letterpress…. and letters. I am actually procrastinating right now instead of finishing my post on something I love to collect "hotel ware". In fact I have been writing about all of the things I collected during my 6 month stay in France. Please stop by the market http://www.splendidmarket.com to read all about it. Okay, now I need to stop the procrastination so you'll be able to read the post!!

Yes I have a collection….a collection of papery stuff and all manner of bits and pieces that I use when making my art. I also have some of these lovely letterpress blogs and have used them often for collages and drawings.

But my most treasured collections are that of (1) feathers and (2) horn cups….you know, the antique ones that people drank beer from. I just adore them! Natural objects with a gorgeous patina, feel and shape.

    Enjoying your gentle blog.

    Ciao

    Robyn
