The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

April 23, 2013 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 11 Comments

Good morning! I hope your week is starting off well. I have a short post for this morning, a recommendation for an excellent book that I read this weekend.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, by Rachel Joyce, have you heard of it?  You may have already read it, so I may be “late to the party” as they say.  But I have just now gotten around to it and enjoyed it so much I read it in a day.

In a nutshell the book is about Harold Fry who receives a letter in the mail one day from an old colleague whom he has not seen for 20 years. Queenie, writes to tell Harold that she is dying and to say goodbye. Harold composes a note in response and while walking to the post box to drop off the letter he decides instead  to walk the 500 miles to deliver it in person.

The book is an adventure, a quest of sorts, and an awakening for a repressed man and the people he meets along the way. As I always say, I do not want to tell you any more as I do not want to give it away.

I know that I am not telling you enough to hook you , but let me say that this is no ordinary adventure and no ordinary book. I know from other reviews that it is not for everyone but I enjoyed it tremendously.

Have a beautiful day!

Very interesting. I'm just finished Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits and have moved on to her book Paula, written for her dying daughter. Her writing is quite amazing. But this sounds like a book for me. Thanks for sharing this Elizabeth. I've been enjoying all your posts lately!

How funny, a friend bought me a copy of this just last week with the instructions that I had to read it ASAP….so you're not the very last to read it!!

I am currently reading "Gone Girl" (apparently the rest of the world has read that too!) but after your recommendation, I shall move on to the book above next.

Elizabeth, thank you so very much for all the kind & heartfelt comments you leave on my blog, I truly appreciate them so much…..they are often the comments and phrases that swirl around my head long after I have read them. The situation with my daughter has improved very slightly, some days it feels as though it's one step forward, one back….her school have been supportive, positive & have made some changes (moving two of he bullies to another class). We have also just started to see a therapist, I went back & forth in my head about that but then decided it would help…we'll see.

It is very difficult to be both strong & objective when the issue is about your child isn't….the whole thing is highly emotional and some days you want to just roar in like a lioness and protect them from everything. You need them to learn to cope but you also need to be a safety net. It's a challenge for sure.

Thank you for your support, have a great day,
    Simone XX

Thank you for suggesting this book. I just finished it and loved it and you are correct, it is not an "ordinary" book. Hugs.
