Year of Wonders

May 1, 2013 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 15 Comments

Good morning! Welcome May!

I think I may have said this every week for the last few months but I heard that some of you are getting SNOW! In fact for many, it is the coldest Spring on record. These are strange times my friends.

On to  happier things, I read another great book this week, it is called Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. Have you read it?

Written by Geraldine Brooks, a former foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal the book is based on actual events. In 1665, villagers in Eyam, Derbyshire vote to quarantine themselves in the village so as not to spread the plague.

The novel is narrated by the courageous, and wise beyond her years, Anna Firth. Though she looses most everything she holds dear during the quarantine she works tirelessly along side the minister, William Monpellion and his wife Elinor.

Not only do they administer to the sick and dying but also try to hold the village together and keep it from completely descending into barbarity.

I think in the end the book shows how in times of crises people either rise to the occasion or become helpless and selfish.

As I do not want to spoil the book for you I will end with this, it is wonderfully written and it makes you think of how you might act in a similar situation.

If you have read the book I would love to know how you liked it. If you have not read it, get yourself a drink and prepare for a nice long afternoon.

Enjoy your day!

P.S. I may be a little sporadic in posting as I have guests for the next week.

WE ARE HAVING RAIN/SNOW MIX TODAY! Can you believe that? I was just boasting the other day about our 70+ weather and I even went out into the gardens to clean! But today is a day worthy of such a novel and a cuppa something sweet! LOVE to you dearest Elizabeth! Anita

I have read Year of Wonders and really liked it. I never expected to be drawn into a book about such a dark time in history, but the title says it all, in my opinion. This book beautifully illustrates the need for contrasts in our lives. Without the backdrop of the book's setting, the wonders would never have been seen. Thanks for your blog!

Elizabeth, "Years of Wonder" has been on my list since its release. Geraldine Brooks is a favorite of mine. This just gives you a hint of long my list is and how little time I have had of late. I have so enjoyed seeing all you pins on pinterest. So many are very close to my own heart. I hope you are having a bit of sun today. The rain is back and temps are beginning to fall. A good time to dive into some school work. A few hours of work, and I can curl up with "Z" without the guilt. Bonnie

Bonnie, we are having more rain. Oh well, it gives me an excuse to bake. I hope you enjoy the book. I know how you fell about the lists and piles…I have 40, yes 40 books on the floor by the bed. It is a sickness to be sure.

I must read this, I remember seeing a play in the early 70s about Eyam, it is a story set deep in the British pscyhe!

I haven't heard of this book.

No snow here, but we can't all be that extraordinarily lucky, can we?
