Halloween Thoughts

October 30, 2014 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 7 Comments

Good morning! Can you believe that Halloween is Friday? Seriously, where does the time go? It seems like Fall just arrived.

I have been thinking about Halloween this week, perhaps because as I take my walk each morning I am amazed at the the decorations, and I am not talking about cute jack-o-lanterns. Entire yards are decked out like haunted houses, with “dead” bodies, frightening ghouls, goblins, scenes from the walking dead, zombies, horrifying witches, ghosts and so much more.

I have to be honest, Halloween is not my favorite holiday. Yes, as a child I loved dressing up and going to parties and trick-or-treating. My costumes were sweet and sunny, I was Glenda the Good Witch from the Wizzard of Oz, or Little Bo Peep and one year an M&M. I refused to dress as something scary.

My favorite part of the day was dumping out my pillow case and checking out all of my tasty treats. Back then I LOVED Snicker bars. and those peanut butter candies in the orange and black wrappers.

My least favorite place was walking along the dark streets, with my siblings, scared to death that something horrible was going to jump put of a bush and carry me off to who knows where.

I know it sounds a little dramatic but that is how I felt and it is probably why I do not like scary movies, and stuff like that now.

What about you, are you a fan of Halloween? Do you have a favorite costume that you used to wear? Do you decorate your yard with pumpkins or do you decorate with scary things?

Whatever the case, I hope that you have a fabulous day and that come Friday you are visited by lots, and lots of little ghosts, goblins, varies, princess and more!

Enjoy!

I am with you Elizabeth. I love Halloween actually but I love all the nice decorations not the scarey ones. There are so many that are in good taste and not witchy terror filled objects of doom. I do not decorate but I do not have small children and generally don't do any kind of celebrating for this occasion. I think I like it mostly because it sort of kicks off the holiday mode. Have a wonderful day – thanks for all the fantastic recipes.

I do like Hallowe'en, but it's been years since I've worn a costume. These days I just like going out and taking pics of the jack o'lanterns.

Not a huge fan but I do love the "license" to eat candy to my hearts content lol. I get scared very easily so the whole haunted thing freaks me out, and so do a lot of the costumes!!
I much prefer Thanksgiving and Christmas:)

I have never embraced the scary part of Halloween!
It's all up beat and fun here on 34th street.
    We always made our costumes.
First, an easy pizza dinner and out the door to seek the candy!
When I was four, I wanted to be an Indian (Native American) Princess.
My mother made the most beautiful costume for me. When I tried it on, I asked, "where is my crown?" The beaded headband was not going to "cut it" for me.
Mom and I made a tin foil crown. I was thrilled! I was a true indian princess in my eyes… I am quite sure that my mother was a little sad that I altered her vision, but she rolled with it!
I too was Little Bo Peep, Elizabeth…or…was it Mary Had A Little Lamb…
    Your porch is lovely!
    Happy Halloween!

Elizabeth, I do love Halloween – as the days grow darker, I love an excuse to decorate! The bright pumpkins on porches add a bit of color, and it's fun to see people's creativity on display as more and more houses get decked out. And I love seeing all the trick or treaters in their costumes – we live in a neighborhood that is big on tricks or treats, so it's always quite the parade. So these are the things about the holiday that I revel in – I'll watch The Great Pumpkin instead of scary movies (which I refuse to view, too) and turn a blind eye to ghoulish goriness and focus on the cuteness and fun – and candy!

Hope you have a safe night on Friday, full of more treats than tricks! XO

    Elizabeth,
I do love Halloween for all the lore. Living in the land of Washington Irving and the story of the Headless Horsemen does live large here. I love the spirit of celebrating, dressing up, trick-or-treating and then opening my door to children who just smile ear to ear for candy!
There is enough "real" scary stuff that I think a little just for fun is all I need.
An after-school volleyball game today had to be cancelled due to a school being on lock-down, now that is scary and I hate that this is the world we live in now.
