My Grandmother’s Caramel Corn

December 9, 2015 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 2 Comments

I love baking, especially recipes that have been passed down from my family. Each time I make one of them it is if I am transported back to my grandmothers’ kitchen. The smells trigger so many happy memories I feel as if she is standing beside me telling me when to add the next ingredient, not to eat the raw dough(which I still do), and not to add too much flour.

Never are these memories more pervasive than at Christmas, the magical, merry time of year. Not only did my grandmother instilled in me the love of baking but the love of baking homemade goodies to give to family and friends. It is my favorite thing to do at the holidays and it makes me smile whenever one of my family members tell me that it “tastes just like grandmother’s”.

Today I thought I would share an easy, scrumptious recipe with you for My Grandmother’s Caramel Corn. My grandmother made this for us all of the time, loose or in the form of popcorn balls.

This buttery, crunchy, sweet popcorn is so easy and a delicious treat to give away or to make and eat with your family while watching the plethora of holiday movies on this month.

Grandma’s Carmel Corn Recipe

2 cups brown sugar

1 cup butter

1/2 cup corn syrup

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. baking soda

6 cups popped corn

Preheat oven to 250. Combine brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, and salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil for 5 minutes and remove from heat. Add baking soda and stir well. Pour mixture over the popcorn and mix well.

Bake for 1 hour, string every 15 minutes. Cool and store in an airtight container.

Do you have a favorite recipe that you make each year from your mother or grandmother? Do you make treats for your family and to share?

This is just the first of many things I am making in the next few weeks, what will you be making?

I hope that you take a minute or two for yourself this holiday and take in the magic of the season.

Have a great day!

I was JUST telling my husband yesterday on our walk, about the popcorn balls I used to help my mother make for Halloween….what fond memories, what great treats back in the day, right before cake mixes became popular (at least in our house!)

Enjoy the beauty and fun of making things by hand dear friend.
