Good morning! I don’t know about you but I am so happy tomorrow is Friday. It has been a long week and frankly I need a rest. I want to be a slug and just do nothing. OK, let me rephrase that, I don;t want to be on a schedule and I do not want to work and I just want to relax, putter around and do what I want, like bake and eat.

I had a conversation a few months ago with an interior designer and she mentioned that she was thinking of giving up her profession because everyone seemed to want the same thing, “the perfect white/grey house” that they see on Pinterest and Instagram. Really? What happened to originality, and making your house your castle? Why would you want your house to look like everyone else?

I do not have a white or grey house and shockingly there are no slip-covers. I have a traditional house with a collected interior. My husband and I have been traveling the world since we were teens and our house reflects that.

We have very eclectic taste, I love traditional Ralph Lauren plaids, and paisleys in dark blues and browns but then I love modern art in bright fuchsia, green and cobalt blue. I think the family crystal looks beautiful with hand-made pottery plates and twig flatware.
I typically shop vintage, antiques and more traditional looking shops, and I love one of a kind things. But I also shop at Williams Sonoma and Pottery barn for seasonal items and occasionally West Elm when I receive their new catalog.

As I paged through the latest offerings online I found several items I liked. I really want this bright rug although I have no where to go with it. I love these mixing bowls and can always use a few more. We buy these Rewind candles all the time and I am pondering these lamb mugs for my niece and nephew.
What in your decorating style? Modern, eclectic, traditional? What is your favorite place for accessories? Do you shop at West Elm? What if your favorite but there?
Have a great day!

Elizabeth I love hearing you describe your style and taste in home decor and personally I think the idea of a collected home that reflects one's life and experiences sounds so much lovelier than a home decor picked for the latest trends. I do like white walls the older I get, prefer to have white as a backdrop to color. But I really like your Pinterest photos with all that lush color, it's so warm and cozy. And I shop like you do too. Love the mix of old and traditional with the occasional modern West Elm piece too. What a fun post, I hope you have a relaxing weekend dear.
hugs,

How would I describe my decorating style? I've never really given it a name before, I like to think it is quite unique! I love the calm a grey and white colour scheme offers but I also love antique furniture. We have several pieces which have been handed down through the generations that I could never sell and so our home has to include a mixture of antique furniture with a few modern items too, I rather like the juxtaposition of the two and think they actually complement each other perfectly. Hope you have a super relaxing weekend! xx

Today you are speaking about a topic that has run my life for over 35 years. Interior Design. So sorry to hear of the designer who wants to give up. Trends come and go, and yes good designers do not last if they only copy what is current. Our clients have curated homes. A mix of old and new always is the most successful in design. Design is starting with a concept and making it your own. As long as we live in house, our firm will be helping make them homes! Great post and we do like West Elm.-Laurel

This post reminds me of the conversation I had with myself just the other day (scary, I know). I was toying with the idea of buying a fake tree versus buying real, when I started to think about tree decorations. Everywhere I look, I see these fantastically put together trees with themes of colors or concepts. My tree? meh. It's full of ornaments my girls made, trinkets from places we have been, and the standard one for each girl for each year (circa 1995). However, each year as the tree goes up, the stories come out and how could I or any of us miss that? Loved the posting…I'm new to following your blog 🙂

I suppose a lot of people, myself included, don't really know what colours clash with what, so tend to go for neutral decor.

I wish we had a Pottery Barn outlet. Don't know if there's West Elm outlets. I don't know why everyone wants a house like everyone elses either.
