Good Monday morning friends, I hope that you had a restful and wonderful weekend. It was a busy one here, it seemed as if I blinked and it was Monday morning. We spent most of the weekend outside cleaning out the beds around the house which over the last few rainy weeks have become overrun and overwhelmed by some sort of sprouted grass. Our lawn man said it is grass but not the sort that you want in your yard so we tried pulling it and eradicating the beds of it. We also spent some time getting a side of the years where we cut down 2 crepe myrtles and removed 10 azalea bushes ready for sod. It was nice to be outside but I will tell you that after a few hours my muscles were sore, my hand had three blisters and I was sunburned, lesson learned, wear gloves and sunscreen.
Aside from that I spent a few hours going down the rabbit hole of gardening blogs and reading about the death of Prince Phillip. What an interesting and amazing many, although he was 99 and lived a full life it seemed as if her would be around forever.
Spring is officially here and with is warm evenings and lots of pollen so the windows are closed until Fall. I know I am not the only one that has this problem but wake up almost every night at 3:30 because I am hot and I spend the rest of the night taking my blankets off and then getting a little cold so I put them back on, then I take them off then I put them back on. It is the only time of the day I have “hot flashes” if that is what they are, maybe they are night sweats, and I am wondering if anyone has a tip on how to mitigate them? Have you tried wearing socks to bed to cool down your core temperature? Or tried a warm shower or bath? I’ve not tried either one yet but I am thinking about it because as the summer gets closer I will not be getting any sleep. Thank you for any and all tips.
I finished reading this book and I ordered The New Heirloom Garden because I after several visits to Monticello over the past few years I am fascinated with heirloom seeds and plants. By the way if you are interested you can learn so much more about Thomas Jefferson, the house and gardens here. Monticello, Mount Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, Versailles and so many other places have live talks on Facebook once a week just in case you didn’t know about it.
Several of you have asked about the the blue and white dress I featured Friday, I did order it and I will let you know when I get it and how it looks, who knows I may even share a photo.
Speaking of blue and white, I also ordered this quilt from Target, I am hoping that changing to lighter bedding helps with the hot flashes.
Tell me, what did you do this weekend? Did you work in the garden? Relax and Read? Travel? Or make something delicious? Whatever it was please share!
Have a great day and w wonderful week.

I used to have hot flashes, mostly in the night, with the result that I woke up then it took a while to get back to sleep. My ob/gyn recommended a supplement called Estroven (does not contain estrogen) and taking it daily cut back on the frequency of hot flashes significantly.

Cathy, thank you for the tip! I am ordering some today!

I have found that leaving one or both feet outside the covers helps “wick” some body heat and is far easier to put only feet back under the covers when you get too cool…good luck.

First off if you wear socks to BED YOU WILL GET HOTTER!AT least that is what happens to me!
I recently learned that if you wake up between 3 and 4 AM you have a LUNG ISSUE!
Google that………maybe related to your allergies!
AS you know from the blog I do which is called MAC or LADY WINDERMERE!
I find if I take a hot bath after dinner I sleep SOLID!
Best of Luck and I look forward to THE PHOTO OF YOU IN A BLUE DRESS!

I tried the socks and you are right, I was too hot. I will have to try the bath.

I also worked on the yard/flower beds all weekend. So happy to be outside!!
I have had night hot flashes for several years (due to cancer and Sudden menopause. My husband bought me a chili pad. It’s a cooling mat under your sheet and you set the temperature you want it to stay it all night. It has helped me tremendously but it is a bit expensive.
I have also heard to take estrovan as well as commented above.
I am somewhat new to your blog and I am very much enjoying it!!
Elizabeth says
I am going to look up the chill pad! Thank you for the tips.

If I tried gardening I’d end up killing the plants.
Elizabeth says
William I know how you feel. It is everything I can do to keep things alive.

The unwelcome grass may be easier to irradiate than hot flashes. I dealt with them for about 10 years … and now it’s just occasional and usually in the middle of the night. I wear socks to bed because my feet are always cold. They come off in the middle of the night … usually before a hot flash hits. Wish I had something more to offer … I had to have my ovaries removed a few years ago and am on HRT. That helped but didn’t entirely get rid of the issue. I have a friend that suffered terribly … I mean she got soaking wet from them (at work) several times during the day for more than a decade. Ok, so I’m not helping!!! Wishing you a great week! Hot flashes, pollen and all! xo
Elizabeth says
Juliet, you made me laugh. It is a challenge to figure things out. The socks did not work. I am looking at alternatives. Have a great day.

That white shirt is so cute, and so are all these sandals! I spent hours a couple of weekends ago pulling weeds, and I really need to do it all over again!
Marie says
Sounds like a very productive weekend! Tiring, but productive!
Elizabeth says
Thank you!

not sure anything will work but if I eat too late at night or sugar it is worse.
Elizabeth says
I think the sugar might be an issue.
Jennifer Marlaine Holmes (williams) says
Let me raise my hand to the hot flashes. I thought I was conquering this unpleasant experience, but holy smokes this is no fun. I have been gardening a great deal, but lately, the wind has just been too much to fight.
Elizabeth says
Jennifer, it is funny because once you think you have them under control, WHAM they are back with a vengeance.
Carol Karl says
I’m with you on the ‘up all night being hot and throwing the blankets off’ thing. Nice round up. Glad you had a lovely weekend in the garden.
