Monday Musings No. 65, a weekend update + 5 Things: what I read, watched, and discovered this weekend and more.
Monday Musings
Good Monday morning friends! How was your weekend? It was a wild weekend here, between the weather and the critters. We spent the entire weekend working in the front beds. We started Friday afternoon, it was 84 and sunny and we got a little burned. Saturday we woke up early to get started before the rain but the weather report was a little off because no sooner were we dressed than the rain came down.
After a few hours putzing around inside the house we were able to get out and fertilize the first 2 beds and add the mulch. I must say that after cleaning a winters worth of pine straw, brown leaves and debris they looks so much better.
Sunday
Sunday was the same, the weather was actually worse but we cleaned out the second batch of beds to get them ready for fertilizer and mulch. Every few hours when there was a lull we were able to get out and do a little work. Sadly our dogs ate some of the organic fertilizer and a few hours later were sick.
Little Critters
Saturday night I I didn’t get any sleep. About 9:00 as I was sitting in bed reading I heard some rustling in the ceiling, near the air vent. The dogs apparently were too tired because they never made a sound. The rustling stopped when I got up to investigate. After a few minutes it stated again, at which point the dogs jumped up and started barking and running around the room looking for the source of the noise.
It sounded like something was digging and making a nest, and as it did things were falling from wherever it was . Our bedroom has no ceiling/attic, there is one small ceiling over a door that goes into the bathroom, it is next to the return air exchange vent. This ruckus went on for about 2 hours. My husband slept through the entire thing, until I woke him up to go outside with me to see if some little critter was eating a hole in the roof.
Whatever little critter was in the ceiling was apparently not tired because he was digging for hours! This morning a look in the attic did not give us any clues as to what was up there. We think it is a squirrel because our neighbor had one last week and her exterminator sealed up the hole it was coming in and displaced the little thing. Maybe we will have an answer once the critter man comes this week.
Ok, onto +5 things!
1.Read
This is not the sort of book I normally read but it is a great book.
The God of Endings
By turns suspenseful and enchanting, this breathtaking first novel weaves a story of love, family, history, and myth as seen through the eyes of one immortal woman.
Collette LeSange is a lonely artist who heads an elite fine arts school for children in upstate New York. Her youthful beauty masks the dark truth of her life: she has endured centuries of turmoil and heartache in the wake of her grandfather’s long-ago decision to make her immortal like himself. Now in 1984, Collette finds her life upended by the arrival of a gifted child from a troubled home, the return of a stalking presence from her past, and her own mysteriously growing hunger.
Combining brilliant prose with breathtaking suspense, Jacqueline Holland’s The God of Endings serves as a larger exploration of the human condition in all its complexity, asking us the most fundamental question: is life in this world a gift or a curse?
