Spring is here! Let’s celebrate the end of winter with some spring self care. Here are 13 ways to rejuvenate yourself after a long winter.
Spring is officially here! Although the wild swings in the weather make some days feel like late Fall, it is time to emerge from hibernation and get ready for a new season. Self-care is something we should make a priority all of the time not just in the Spring. So if it is not something that comes natural to you, this is your chance to make a change because Spring is a time of renewal and and new beginnings. You can start with these 13 self-care ideas.
13 Self-care Ideas for Spring
1. Get outside
Make sure to get outside everyday, soak up some vitamin D, enjoy the suns’ warmth on your skin, take a walk, a bike ride or simply sit and enjoy the sounds of nature. It has been a long year and this Spring it feels to me as if I am bear coming out of hibernation. Maybe even start eating lunch outside so that you can enjoy nature and give yourself a boost to get through your work day. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
2. Clean your closets
Purge your closet of all things warm and fuzzy and resembling winter. Sort them out and donate the pj’s, sweaters, winter coats, mitten and whatever else you do not want and donate it. The rest, especially our cashmere and wool sweaters get ready to store for the next six months. I do not move too many clothes for the changing of the seasons but I do store my cashmere sweaters in a Tupperware bin with lavender sachets. I have lost too many sweaters over the years to moths and this has worked to save my favorite sweaters the last few years. If you have a better tip let me know.
3. Spring Clean Your Home
Spring is the perfect time to do a deep clean of your house, throw open the windows, let in some cool crisp air and get rid of the stale air from winter. Scrub the floors of the salt and dirt, change out your winter down bedding and flannel sheets for your cotton sheets and lighter blankets. Wash the baseboards, the walls, pillows and cushions as well as the carpets and rugs. Tackle all of the chores that you do once a year. A deep clean is cathartic and makes your house shine and ready for the new season.
4. Give Yourself Flowers
The next time you are at Trader Joe’s or your local grocery store, why not treat yourself to a bouquet of your favorite flowers? Take them home and make a few little arrangements, one for your bedside table, one for your vanity, maybe one next to your desk, put these little pops of color and scent wherever you will enjoy seeing them most.
Or you could get outside and forage, cut some cherry blossoms or dogwood branches add them to a big vase and voila you have a beautiful and natural arrangement. I did that last week, I asked my neighbors if I could cut some large 21/2 -3 ft. long branches of their white cherry blossoms and I brought the outdoors inside.
One other thing I love to do is to add herbs to my arrangements or other greens from my plants and trees outside, sometimes I just make bouquets of fresh herbs and have them on the counter in the kitchen.
5. Change Your Menu
Why not change your menu? Transition from the seasonal fruits, vegetables and heavy comfort foods of Fall and Winter and add more colorful berries and vegetables available in the Spring, like carrots, asparagus, strawberries, etc. Make yourself some beautiful salads, lighter soups(there are still chilly nights), and pastas. 6. Plant a Garden
You could plant a garden or plant a few containers, sow some seeds or buy some plants from the local nursery. If you do not have room for a full scale garden or you do not have a green thumb(ME) plant a few containers or window boxes with your favorite flowers and herbs, it will add a little or a lot of color and will definitely brighten your spirits.
7. Wash You Car
Wash your car to get rid of the winter salt and grime. Then clean the inside of the dust, dirt and extraneous winter mittens, scarves and other items that you will need for next year. Put on your bike rack so that you are ready for the next few months.
8. Re-visit Your Skin and Beauty Routine
The cold winter weather is harsh on our skin, as is being inside with the heat on so be sure that you are moisturizing your skin. Look at your winter makeup and and maybe change it out for some brighter colors, or just use less.
9. Plan a Day out or Maybe a Summer Trip
Maybe take a day trip, visit a favorite place or somewhere new. As for planning a summer trip you could contact your favorite travel agent and ask their advice, there are several that I know who are hard at work making plans for families to travel the world this summer. I have several short trips on the calendar over the next few months and am would love to get to Scotland or Iceland this fall.
10.Redecorate a Room
Freshen up a room in your house. You can make amazing changes with a can of paint or a few pillows and accessorize. Or you could challenge yourself to redecorate only using things in your house or from a thrift store.
11. Create a Vision Board for a New Season and Your New Vision
If you already have a vision board take a look at it and see what’s changed? Have you accomplished a few of your goals? If so maybe you want to add new ones? If you have never made one this is a great opportunity to take stock of your goals, dreams, and visions for the season, the year and beyond.
12. Limit Your Time on Social Media
The world is an amazing and beautiful place, take a break from social media and enjoy your world, your friends and your family not the world portrayed on those little squares. Enjoy a walk at the beach, or in the woods, or a date with a friend for coffee. Don’t let the beautiful sunny days go to waste because soon it will be winter again.
13. Schedule “Me Time”
“Me time” is always a good idea, even if it is just 10 or 15 minutes a day. Take time to journal, meditate, and to rest, regroup, reflect and relax. Taking care of yourself is as important as taking care of all of the people in your life. In fact it is even more important because if you are not well how can your care for them?
