It’s May Day! Today on the blog I am sharing a weekend update + 5 Things: what I read, watched, and discovered this weekend on Monday Musings.
May Day Musings
Good morning friends! Happy May day! Just typing that takes me back to my childhood dancing around the May pole celebrating the beginning of summer. Colorful ribbons attached to a white pole and happy, laughing children dancing and laughing as they went round and round.
Did you do that in grade school? We even crowned a May Day queen. Ironic really because more often than not the weather never felt anything summer or even spring like. May Day is also the
Today it is much the same, bright, sunny and chilly.
Weekend update
How was your weekend? I had a busy one. Saturday I joined Kim and Juliet for weekend meanderings, then onto a soggy Spring Fest, after which I went to the farmers market. The sun finally made an appearance in time for cocktails on the porch with friends and then dinner, after which I wound down.
Saturday was prom night and everywhere we went in the village were happy, smiling your girls dressed to the nines with their date. Snapping photos and laughing at their own antics. A complete contrast to the serious, shocked faces that were on partial lockdown at school just the day before.
Even in my sleepy village, which at times seems so idyllic and removed from the world, there is evil lurking. Friday morning a young football player came to school and stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot. She is currently in critical but stable condition and he is locked up. Two lives forever changed.
Sunday we did work in the yard between the rains, worked on a few projects in the house and got ready for our guests. Then we spent the evening at home with friends that arrived from Atlanta, munching on charcuterie before moving on to Thai food and dessert. I didn’t get to bed until after midnight so I am a little bleary eyed this morning.
No complaints here because my cup is full. I am blessed to have spent a happy, packed weekend laughing and talking with friends. By contrast my husband spent it with childhood friends in Texas celebrating the life of one who had just passed from cancer.
Enough about me, onto +5 Things.

Hello from Louisburg, NC, just north of Raleigh. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. Thank you as I know it is a lot of work. Today, one of your suggested articles on squirrel deterrent said to use hot peppers. Ha! I had read that before, so some time ago. I liberally put cayenne pepper on the birds’ suet cakes ( it doesn’t affect birds). The squirrels loved it so much they even invited friends to their new ethnic restaurant in my backyard. Lesson learned: hot pepper squirrel deterrent doesn’t work in the South!

First let me say, welcome! I thank you for reading and am happy that you enjoy the blog. I have squirrels that are eating everything in sight, including my camellia flowers while they were in bloom. I laughed out loud at your cayenne pepper suet cakes, and I love to imagine the squirrels inviting and enjoying dinner in your new “ethnic” restaurant.
Thank your for your lovely comment and tips! Have a wonderful week.

I don’t know why everyone promotes linen items.
It has to be pressed to be presentable.
Life is too short to wanna spend the summer pressing clothes.
Please explain to me.
I enjoyed the book so much, also.
Elizabeth says
Hello Nan,
Aside from table linens, which I press no matter what material, I typically do not mind if my clothing is a little creased after I iron it. I usually iron my linen clothing and wear them and think they are supposed to look a little creased nd comfortable.
That said, I agree, summer and life are too short to be pressing my outfits. Yet another reason I wear dresses!
The book is so great! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, hopefully others will enjoy it too.
