Earth Day, Michael Douglas, Franklin, The Bookbinder of Jericho and more on Monday Musings.
MONDAY MUSINGS NO. 119
Happy Monday friends, and Happy Earth Day. Earth Dates back to the 1970’s and today is celebrated in 190 countries. This year the theme of the day is Planet vs. Plastics. It calls on government leaders, businesses, and everyday people to reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040. It is also calling for the elimination of single use plastics by the end of this decade.
Things you can do to celebrate Earth Day:
- Go on a clean up around your neighborhood or town and fill a trash bag with trash, plastics and cans.
- Plant a tree.
- Get outside, take a walk or a bike ride. Enjoy the bird song, or the silence of nature.
- Conserve water, add a rain barrel to your yard to water your containers and plants.
- Plant a vegetable garden, or grow some herbs and tomatoes in containers.
- Attract pollinators, plant flowers, shrubs and trees to attract pollinators. You could even plant a wildflower garden or a meadow in your yard. Add a bat box to your yard and a solitary bee house too!
- Conserve energy, turn off lights when you leave the room.
- Don’t waste food, Americans waste 60 million tons of food a year!
- Save gas, take a walk or ride your bike to do short errands if possible.
- Don’t use single use plastics, i.e, straws, water bottles, bags. Use your favorite water bottle, grocery totes and try bamboo utensils, we have these in the car and love them.
I wanted to say WELCOME to all of the new followers of the blog, I hope that you find a recipe to enjoy, a book to read, maybe a new outfit and also that you make a new friend or two.
Ok, on to +5 Things.
1. READ~The Bookbinder of Jericho
The Bookbinder of Jericho
I just finished this book and loved it, any book that talks about books is always a favorite.
It is 1914, and as the war draws the young men of Britain away to fight, women must keep the nation running. Two of those women are Peggy and Maude, twin sisters who live on a narrow boat in Oxford and work in the bindery at the university press.
Ambitious, intelligent Peggy has been told for most of her life that her job is to bind the books, not read them—but as she folds and gathers pages, her mind wanders to the opposite side of Walton Street, where the female students of Oxford’s Somerville College have a whole library at their fingertips. Maude, meanwhile, wants nothing more than what she has: to spend her days folding the pages of books in the company of the other bindery girls. She is extraordinary but vulnerable, and Peggy feels compelled to watch over her.
Then refugees arrive from the war-torn cities of Belgium, sending ripples through the Oxford community and the sisters’ lives. Peggy begins to see the possibility of another future where she can educate herself and use her intellect, not just her hands. But as war and illness reshape her world, her love for a Belgian soldier—and the responsibility that comes with it—threaten to hold her back.
The Bookbinder is a story about knowledge—who creates it, who can access it, and what truths get lost in the process. Much as she did in the international bestseller The Dictionary of Lost Words, Pip Williams thoughtfully explores another rarely seen slice of history through women’s eyes.

2.WATCHED~Franklin
Based on Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff’s book, “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America,” “Franklin” explores the thrilling story of the greatest gamble of Benjamin Franklin’s career.
I just started watching Franklin and I am fascinated and learning about a part of American history I either never learned or cannot remember(more likely).

OUTFIT OF THE DAY
Black and white never goes out of season. Today I paired this gorgeous black linen shirt(the red and white is fabulous too) with a pair of crop white jeans. I added black slide sandals, but you could also wear sneakers or ballet flats, a tote to carry a tablet, wallet and anything I might buy and then two bangle bracelets. Pull a bangle or two from your collection and make a stack, let them be the star of the outfit!

Happy Wednesday, Elizabeth! I’m a bit late, but I really enjoyed Monday Musings. I liked your Earth Day ideas. The first time I read The Book Binder of Jericho I struggled a bit to get into it – I think because I had a galley copy and it was electronic. Now I have the hard cover I am really getting into the story. Have you read The Dictionary of Lost Words? I absolutely loved it. Have a lovely rest of the week!
