Monday Musings No. 237 | The Calendar Is Speeding Up and I Am Not Ready

October means slippers before chocolate, pups running rug to rug, a weekend in the garage and a mystery novel I could not put down

monday musings october cozy morning with pumpkins, books and a cup of hot chocolate

I do not know about you, but since the page turned to fall it feels like someone has quietly sped up the calendar. Halloween is around the corner, and after that the countdown begins in earnest. Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and then December, where I can finally exhale and sink into all of the Christmas things I have been looking forward to since August. October and November are busy months for blogging and for life, and I am already a little tired just thinking about it.

Yesterday morning I opened the front door and immediately turned back for my fuzzy slippers and sweatshirt. The pups have made their seasonal adjustment too. They will no longer walk on the brick or wood floors. They run, island to island, from one area rug to the next, which is both adorable and amusing. It is officially rug season in this house.

I spent most of the weekend in the garage. It was more productive than I expected, though I will be honest: I find it difficult to get rid of things. Not for sentimental reasons, or not only for sentimental reasons, but because everything made these days seems so cheap and disposable that I end up keeping the old things just in case. Does anyone else feel that way? There is something about a well-made object from thirty years ago that puts today’s version to shame, and I cannot quite bring myself to let it go.

What about you? What did your weekend look like? Did you do a little fall cleaning, bake some pumpkin bread, read and relax?

What I’m Reading

Three Things About Elsie Joanna Cannon Monday Musings fall reading

This week I finished Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon, and if you have not found Joanna Cannon yet, please let this be your introduction.

Eighty-four-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly and is waiting to be rescued. While she waits she thinks about her best friend Elsie, and about a secret the two of them have been carrying for decades. A charming new resident has just arrived at the home who looks exactly like a man who died sixty years ago, and Florence is not sure how much longer that secret is going to stay buried.

It is a mystery wrapped around a love letter to old age and to lifelong female friendship. If you loved The Trouble with Goats and Sheep you already know what you are in for. If you have not read her, start here.

What I Watched

Pour yourself something warm before you press play on this one. Poetry of a Slow Life is exactly what it sounds like. The English countryside in early October, the trees just beginning to turn, the light doing what October light does when you are somewhere quiet enough to notice it. The creator is excited to share the season arriving and takes you along on the journey from the first hints of gold through the full color coming in. It is the kind of video you watch and wish you were there.

Outfit of the Week

Fashion over 50 Barbour jacket fall outfit

It is Barbour time. Or at minimum, barn coat time. I have had all of mine for over twenty years and I reach for them constantly from October through April. They are an investment, no question, but a waxed Barbour jacket is the kind of thing you buy once and then wonder why you waited so long. Today’s outfit is cords, a cozy sweater, suede boots and a bag, with a seasonal scent to finish. Simple, warm and exactly right for a cool fall day.
