Good morning and a happy Saturday to you! It’s time for weekend meandering with Kim and Juliet, our weekly series where we share all of the things that piqued our interest and caught our eye over the past week.

It has been a busy week, I am ready to relax and take a little breather. Thankfully we have no plans for the weekend.

Halloween is Tuesday. Are you going to any parties this weekend? Do you have trick or treat this weekend or do you have it on the 31st?

No party plans but trick or treat this weekend and on the 31st depending upon where you live.

What about you? What are your weekend plans?

Ok get yourself a drink and a snack and settle in because I have lots to share. Let’s meander.

WEEKEND MEANDERINGS

Hans Christian Andersen~Papercutter

Hans Christian Andersen is best known for his fairy tales; The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, too name just a few. But did you know that he was also a prolific paper cutter?

I did not, but discovered this fun fact this past week. Off I went to do a little research and here is what I discovered.

Hans liked to make paper cuts as he was telling stories and the stories went on as long as he was cutting the paper. Sometimes they were illustrations of the tale he was telling and other times just interesting things that he saw, including the erruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

It is believed that he made thousands of the paper cut pieces of art but there are only 400 left today. He gave the paper cuts to whomever was around while he was telling his stories, to family and to friends.

If you want to know more about his incredible paper cuts, there is a beautiful book available and you can read more about his work here.

One to Follow~ The Splendid Table with Francis Lam

The Splendid Table is a long running radio show on NPR that also has a blog and a podcast. No surprise it is all about food! It’s “the radio show for people who love to eat.”

Francis Lam The Splendid Table.

This week Francis spent an entire hour with Dorie Greenspan one of my all time favorite cookbook authors. She has written 14 cookbooks and has worked with pastry chefs from around the world.

Does anyone remember way back in 2008 when Tuesdays With Dorie started? Each week we would bake one of the recipes from Baking: From My Home to Yours? I loved that group and all of the insights and tips to better baking. By the way, the book is fabulous too. I have many of Dories books and love them all, just in case you are looking for a baking book.

Back to The Splendid Table, if you love food, food preparation, and culture, including travel and restaurants from around the world this is the show/podcast for you!

SHOP SMALL

As the holidays approach I thought I would share a few small businesses and friends that have shops that you might not be aware of. I will try to add a few each week.

Burren Perfumery

A few weeks ago while reading Country Living UK I came across a fascinating article about Sadie Chowen and The Burren Perfumery.  Founded in 1972, The Burren Perfumery is a family company which creates high quality cosmetic products inspired by the land. Sadie and her team, including her husband and daughter create perfume, soaps, candles, lotions and teas.

Sadie was visiting a friend in Burren 30 years ago, and fell in love, not with a person but with the land of Burren. She said she felt like she was home. Trading her career in film production for work with horses and free lance for a few years she then took a job as the owner of Burren Perfumerys’ “right hand”. She planted the herb garden, did the accounting and various other jobs. Then in 2001 when the opportunity became available she purchased Burren Perfumery.

The rest as they say is history. The perfumery is located in a 200 year old farmhouse at the heart of the Burren in County Clare. It is a limestone region which hosts 70% of Ireland’s species of flowers and is on the edge of a National Park.

In addition to the perfumery you can visit the tea room and gardens. If you don’t have a visit scheduled to Ireland, you can purchase these small batch perfumes online at Burren Perfumery with free shipping! I ordered Frond and Autumn Harvest.

Hood Candle Company

I’ve been a longtime follower of Pamela @salishseacottage and have enjoyed her cottage renovations, forays into beekeeping and now her beautiful candles.

Pamela launched the Hood Canal Candle Company in 2020 from her cottage by the sea in Washington state.  She offers hand-poured, eco friendly candles in limited edition seasonal scents as well as the PNW collection. All of the candles are available on Etsy.

Annie Most Lovely Things

You probably know Annie from her blog, Most Lovely Things but did you know that 2 years ago she opened a shop? She sells new and vintage pieces and she recently returned from a buying trip to France. Make sure to check out her shop, you might find the perfect gift for someone on your list or for yourself.

  1. I began listening to the Splendid Table back when Lynn Rosetto Casper hosted it in the mid 90’s. I would tape it on cassette tape to listen to later. When she retired I quit listening to it but always enjoyed and learned a lot. I should subscribe to the podcast now…no longer need cassette tapes..lol.
That was a neat story about the paper cuttings of HCA.

  2. so many good finds!! I want to get the Flowers book for my mother-in-law. And isn’t Annie’s shop fun and a lot cheaper than a trip to France 🙂

  3. Happy weekend, Elizabeth! Fascinating about Hans Christian Andersen … I had no idea. You’re always bringing us interesting people and places. Splendid Table is new to me … I suppose I should be embarrassed to admit it. But I’ll need to do a deep dive now. Loved your tartine this week. Wishing you a lovely weekend and Happy Halloween! xo

  4. Elizabeth,
Thank you so much for mentioning my shop and even including a photo! So thoughtful of you!!
I love your outfit of the week! That cardigan from Alex Mill is the prettiest! Did you see on their Instagram that someone made cookies of many pieces from their collection—including the cardigan??

    1. Annie, you are more than welcome. I loved many items in your shop by sadly missed out. I am sure that all of the pieces went to happy homes.
Alex Mill has so many beautiful pieces. I am off to check out the cookies! That sounds so cute.
      Have a wonderful weekend.

  5. So many interesting things this week Elizabeth. I remember the article about The Burren Perfumery, thank you for the reminder, I will take a look.

If you get anything from Burren let us know!

  6. Regarding Country Living UK, do you pick it up at the bookstore or have a subscription? I was looking into it the other day because I think I’d like it. I don’t care for Country Living in the US. I love all the pumpkins! I wish I could cook and bake as well as I know you do. I will check out the candles and the other shop. It’s drizzling and cold here.

  7. Elizabeth I loved your post this week. The Burren perfume really looks like a magical place. I have to look at that for a gift. Great idea shopping small and early. I love that Hans Christian Andersen also did these amazing papers! They are stunning.
Great outfit with the vest.. and I love that black handbag! I’m saving your soup too.. I missed the Tartine and yours looks so good for fall!
