I cannot believe that Summer is almost over. Don’t get me wrong, with the almost unbearable heat and humidity this year I will not be sad to see the end of it.

I am however a little down that my schedule this year did not allow me to go “home” to the Midwest. I love it there in the summer. For a long time our family had a beautiful cabin which my parents designed and built. The cabin was on a cliff, overlooking a lake who’s walls were carved by glaciers.

We loved going there in the summer to swim, go boating, fishing and to visit the little nearby towns.

Or to sit on the wrap around porch and have barbeque’s and watch the fireflies and the stars.
Then in the winter we would go and ski or just drive up for the weekend and never leave the house.

We parked ourselves, in our jammies, in front of the two story field stone fireplace with books, cocoa and snacks and spent a perfect weekend.

After all is there anything better than a good book and good company?
At the end of a wonderful day, we would climb the stairs to the loft where we would snuggle under our warm blankets and watch the glow of the last ember below.

I have been thinking of those times a lot this summer, perhaps it is the weather, or just nostalgia, who knows. Whatever it is I do know that I would love to be there for a week taking in the great outdoors and spending time with family and friends. Oh well, maybe next year.

How wonderful to have such fantastic childhood memories. I've always holidayed by the sea, but I can imagine the delight of a cabin, and it sounds so cosy in the winter.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this.
Here I am in the midwest, and we do NOT have a cabin and never will. BUT our own home here in the city is so fabulous that each day, we both just sigh with joy as we ENJOY each room, each book tucked away on our shelves, and now, a beautiful new deck upon which we can sit and read, look at the flickering lights and hear our water fountain.
HELLO THERE SWEET ONE! WE HAVE ONE MORE MONTH TO GO. I hope that you will be able to escape just a bit to enjoy the silence of your heart. BACK IN EMAIL! Anita

Oh you have me wanting to go to the midwest to some charming remote cabin….even though I have no family there:) What a perfect picture you paint. Funny 10 years ago in my 30's I would have considered this to be boring and too calm, but NOW….THIS IS THE PERFECT VACATION!! If I could find a cabin like the one you have described and showed us, I would be there as fast as my little canoe could take me there…DREAMY!! Loved this…..
The second picture of the canoe on the lake is incredible I could spend time enjoying that peace and quiet.

Hi Elizabeth… well, you swept me away on this one. From hot and humid Ho Chi Minh City to a cabin on a lake. It does not get any better than that! I hope you are able to get home soon…I can appreciate the feeling of being homesick. 🙂
Thanks so much for all your kind messages these past few weeks. I appreciate each and every one. I am slowly playing catch up between settling in and finding my way around HCMC. It is all very exciting and overwhelming at times. So glad you enjoyed the Elegance of a Hedgehog. I did not know they made a movie as well. I will be sure to look for it. I hope all is well. We are not getting as much of the Olympic events as you are…sounds like fun. I am enjoying your enthusiasm!!
