Friday Favorites from Flourishing Foodie, A Flavor Journal, Mind Body Green, and More

January 20, 2019 By Elizabeth@ Pine Cones and Acorns 6 Comments

Good morning! I hope that you had a good week, mine was certainly better than last week but I will admit I am so looking forward to the weekend.

Interesting Food

While you are preparing for the big storm coming this weekend you might want to pick up the ingredients for this White Bean and Kale Soup from Flourishing Foodie, it looks hearty, comforting and delicious.

Beer Cheese Soup Image Here

Spicy White Cheddar Cheese Beer Soup from A Flavor Journal is on my list to make this weekend.

Healthy and delicious, Chicken Avocado Salad with Peanut Dressing from How Sweet Eats.

Hot Chocolate Oatmeal

When I was little I remember that my grandmother ate chocolate rice for breakfast and I couldn’t wait to try be able to try it. This week I discovered something a little more healthy, Hot Chocolate Oatmeal from Mind Body Green.

The Ultimate Brownie Muffin is just that, and more, not necessarily healthy but they are a great treat.

Interesting Books

From the best selling author of The Thirteenth Tale, Diane Setterfield Once Upon a River.

Once Upon a River is a glorious tapestry of a book that combines folklore and science, magic and myth. Suspenseful, romantic, and richly atmospheric, the beginning of this novel will sweep you away on a powerful current of storytelling, transporting you through worlds both real and imagined, to the triumphant conclusion whose depths will continue to give up their treasures long after the last page is turned.

Kitchen Yarns

I just received Kitchen Yarns by Ann Hood and I cannot wait to read it this weekend.

Hood tracks her lifelong journey in the kitchen with twenty-seven heartfelt essays, each accompanied by a recipe (or a few). In “Carbonara Quest,” searching for the perfect spaghetti helped her cope with lonely nights as a flight attendant. In the award-winning essay “The Golden Silver Palate,” she recounts the history of her fail-safe dinner party recipe for Chicken Marbella—and how it did fail her when she was falling in love. Hood’s simple, comforting recipes also include her mother’s famous meatballs, hearty Italian Beef Stew, classic Indiana Fried Chicken, the perfect grilled cheese, and a deliciously summery peach pie.

Stitch in Time

Stitch in Time by Daphne Kalma.

Donut is an eleven-year old geography buff who keeps her taxidermied mice hidden in her late mother’s hope chest. Her pops passed away, leaving her an orphan. Aunt Agnes has moved in, bringing along her lumpy oatmeal, knitting, and a plan to drag Donut off to Boston forever.

Donut stands to lose everything: her friends, her village, her home, the woods, and walks where the memories of her pops are stored up.

While Donut dodges the ache of missing her pops, she and her best friend Tiny plan how to keep her where she belongs.

Interesting Finds

I love feathers and collect them on my walks when I find them. I discovered this Feather plate from Pier 1 this week and thought you might like to know that it is on sale for .68 cents!

I love this sweater dress from Anthropologie! It’s $48.00.

Valentine’s day placemat from Target.

Be You Candle from Target.

Everything below is less than $5.00.

Please share your favorite recipes, books, articles, movies and whatever else that you found this week.

Have a safe and happy weekend.

All of your foods here look scrumptious, especially the first few. I can't believe you got that feather plate so cheap! It's beautiful. Can you tell me what shopstyle is? That is where it goes to when I click on the link to go to Pier 1 for the plate.

I remember loving beer cheese soup from years ago but it was made with Velvetta. This recipe sounds so much better! And it's going to be cold enough to try it because what I loved about the old beer cheese soup was how it warmed you while sipping it. I printed out the chocolate muffins too, sounds like little chocolate cakes. I have Ann Hood's book on my must read list!
