Weekend Meanderings…All Things Jubilee

June 4, 2022 By Elizabeth 11 Comments

All things Platinum Jubilee on weekend meanderings. Including Jubilee videos, food, parties and more.

Good Saturday morning, usually I join my friends Juliet and Kim for Weekend Meanderings, unfortunately Juliet is not feeling well this weekend.

Kim and I will carry on as usual and we wish our friend Juliet a speedy recovery. In case you missed Juliets’ post from last week or you would like to wish her well you can pop over and see her here.

I had way too much fun, food, and sun last weekend so this week I tried to get back with a little extra sleep and some better food options. I ate my strawberry salad three times this week. If you missed it you can find the recipe here. I wasn’t so successful with the extra sleep as I was up early watching the Jubilee, which I thought would be fun to share today.

I am off for a walk, a cup of hot chocolate and some time in the garden.

Let’s get to it…weekend meanderings.

Weekend Meanderings…All Things Jubilee

weekend meanderings crown in snow

I grew up with aspirations to be a princess. As a child I visited The Enchanted Forest amusement part where I met my first princess friends and from then on that was my goal. I wanted to have beautiful sparkly dresses and a crown.

Then I became enchanted with Cinderella. Do you remember waiting once a year to watch Cinderella on tv, the one with Leslie Ann Warren? I sat with my bowl of popcorn and sang along  “in my own little corner, in my own little world, I can be what ever I want to be” and dreamed of the magical life of being a princess.

A real life princess came into my life as a teen, Princess Diana. Like many I watched her wedding along with the rest of her life in the pages of People magazine.

With age comes wisdom and the life of a princess isn’t all beautiful dresses, crowns and castles.

It is hard work and sacrifice too. I have enjoyed watching the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of one princess, Elizabeth, who ascended to the throne at the age of 25 and is now celebrating 70 years as a Queen.  Queen Elizabeth is an amazing woman and I am thrilled to watch along with the world the celebration of her Platinum Jubilee.

You can find the schedule of events on the BBC which I have linked above, as well as, on the Official Platinum Jubilee Site.

Jubilee Celebrations

It is easy to host a Jubilee celebration, in the UK this week many people will be hosting street parties. If you are one of them make sure to share your party location on the interactive map.

Email an invite to your neighbors or go door to door to let them know that you are hosting a celebration. Ask them to bring their favorite food and drink, add some music and some bunting and enjoy the day!

Jubilee Party Food

Did you know there was a competition for a special dessert/pudding to celebrate the Jubilee? You can see the competition above or here.

I do not know if there is an official menu for a street party but here are a few things I would serve if I were hosting one myself.

Savory Jubilee Food

I dunno…I’ve always felt weird about celebrating a monarch for which we fought a war of independence. I lost family members in the Revolutionary War and I’m a DAR member, so the royal stuff just feels wrong to me!

Amy, that is an interesting perspective. I guess I never looked at it that way. Thank you for sharing that side of the story.

Elizabeth, ( By the way, how do you like sharing the Queen’s name?) I love this post, and could have written it!

I still remember the Cinderella show and watching it with my blanket as a girl on the couch. Being a princes seemed like a dream. I believe we were raised on fairy tales back then. Seeing a nearly regular girl become the Queen to be was very exciting, and I think why Diana held so much fascination for us of that age. Seeing the fairy tale fall apart was also heartbreaking and I think my soul was crushed a little the day she died. It took me a while to respect and understand the queen again. Now in her older years, I see her devotion to this job was unlike any other person and there is much to appreciate in this world of fast everything.. Also, I guess I’m just holding on to the last vestiges of tradition, which seem to be quickly going away in this world. I love all of that!

Elizabeth, you have found some beautiful things to commemorate this Jubilee! Love that scarf. I think that would be useful and so special to own!! The china too!

I love the street parties and shared we need those! What a fantastic tradition. Cucumber sandwiches, Pimm’s Cups, Coronation Chicken, and Eton Mess are all so good. This is making me want a trip to the UK so badly.

Hope you enjoy the weekend !! Wish we could have a Pimm’s together.

Kim, I could not agree with you more! I think Diana was every young girls dream, until life got in the way. So many people do not realize that the monarchy is an institution/firm, almost like a company and there are rules, and your life is never going to be your own or the same again. As for the Queen…she is amazing. 70 years as the Queen, the ups and downs of life all played out in front of the world and there was never a mis-step from her.
I love all of the Jubilee “finds” so many great things to commemorate such a beautiful and special occasion.
I think you need to make your own bunting, I think you can make it without hack to sew buy using some ironing tape.
Have a wonderful weekend. I hope you enjoy every minute of the Jubilee!

Funny the tea towel reminds me of that conversation Diana apparently had with her sisters when she wanted to back out of the wedding, finding out Charles was still with Camilla.. They told her too late, your face is already on the tea towels! Poor Diana.

Happy Monday, Elizabeth! So sorry to miss out on our weekend fun, but happy to be catching up now. Love that you, Kim and I are all such Royal fans. The Queen … ‘our’ queen is how I think of her, as she’s been there our entire lives. I was raised by a mother who loved the Royals and remember getting up to watch Princess Anne’s first wedding. I missed a lot of the Jubilee but will be catching up throughout the week with your great links and all the social media. Can’t get enough. I didn’t know about the BBC’s pudding competition and will be queuing it up right away. Have a great week and God Save the Queen! xo

I loved Diana, and used to read all the magazines which showed all of her fashion choices at the time. I could relate to her, as we were married around the same time, and had children around the same time. She had a good heart, and I have a music box with her on the lid to always remember her. : )

Sheri, Diana was an amazing woman and led an interesting life. I wonder what she would make of the turmoil in the family.
