Reflection Questions That Will Transform You

The end of the year is upon us and traditionally this is the time of year that people think about a fresh start and new beginnings. Loosing loved ones young and old this year has shifted my thoughts and priorities. Things, possessions, and goals that in the past seemed important to me are not any longer. Add in aging and accumulated wisdom and lessons that come with it and I am looking at the new year with fresh eyes and asking myself 25 Reflection Questions for the New Year.

quote-Juansen Dizon-I hope you realize that every day is a fresh start for you. That every sunrise is a new chapter in your life waiting to be written.

What are Reflection Questions?

Reflection questions are questions that allow you to self-reflect on your life. They help you to sit with your own thoughts to examine your, feelings and attitude about life, relationships, your job, goals and the past, present and the future. There is no right or wrong answer, they are a reflection of you, your life and your feelings, no one else’s.

The start of a new year is a blank page and a great time to look at key areas of your life and see what you want to change. That said, everyday is a great day for starting over if that is what you want.

quote-Avina Celeste -Enter this new year with a gratitude for this new chance to create your dreams.

Why Reflection Questions Matter More Than Resolutions

Most people skip straight to goal setting without understanding what the past year taught them. Resolutions feel exciting, but they rarely stick. Reflection questions give you the real and often times raw material you need to set goals that actually match who you are right now and what you learned over the past year(s).

The process of answering questions forces you to slow down and think. You start to see what energized you versus what drained you. You notice which relationships added value and which ones took more than they gave. You recognize the habits that moved you forward towards your goals and the ones that kept you right where you are.

This kind of clarity does not happen automatically. Your brain is wired to move forward, not to sit and to analyze. Reflection questions give you the time and the space for an honest evaluation of your thoughts, feelings and goals. That evaluation becomes the foundation for smarter decisions in the year ahead.

How to Use the Reflection Questions

The best way to use reflective questions is to just start.

  • Set aside dedicated time where you will not be interrupted. This is not something you can do well in five minute chunks between other tasks.
  • Choose a quiet space where you can think without distractions. Some people prefer journaling at a coffee shop, while others need complete solitude at home.
  • Write down your answers, writing forces clarity. It helps you process your thoughts and feelings. You also create a record you can come back to later.
  • Be honest. These answers are for you, not for social media or anyone else. The value comes from real honesty, even when it is uncomfortable. If you had a terrible year in some areas, acknowledge that. If you made poor choices, own them. Sugarcoating your answers defeats the purpose of reflection and doesn’t help you in any way.
  • Take your time. Return to questions that feel difficult. The ones you want to skip are often the most revealing.
  • Practice self-compassion. Reflection is about observation, not self-criticism.
  • Be specific, answer in complete thoughts not one word answers.
  • We all have lofty goals but it is important to set realistic goals. Once you answer the questions, let the list sit for a few days and revisit it. Reviewing the question with fresh eyes may give you new insight.
  • Seek outside help and guidance if needed, from a life coach or a therapist.

You can answer all of the 25 questions, or pick and choose a few to answer. If you don’t like these questions, make your own list.

Keep the list and the answers in your notebook, journal or agenda. Look back and them every few weeks over the course of the next year to see if your are on track to meet your goals.

Until Next Time

Reflection questions have become one of my non-negotiables at the start of the new year. They force me to slow down and process what happened instead of just racing into the next year. Some years the answers are uncomfortable, but that discomfort always leads to better decisions for the future. This year is no different.

How do you start the New Year? With resolutions? Reflection questions? Or a word of the year?

  1. These questions are inspiring, thanks for sharing.

I originally came to your blog for a recipe, via a link in another blog (I can’t remember which one). I’ve kept coming back because you have an interesting take on a bit of this and a bit of that – I agree, hard to categorize. I’m not much of a cook but I’ve found a few good recipes here, a few things to buy that I would not have found on my own (usually plaid), links to interesting articles, etc. I’m all for you continuing the way you are.

  2. Interesting, you should ask these questions this morning. I am not any of those niches specifically either. I missed that ‘lifestyle’ isn’t a niche any more. I blog about a little of this and that. Why do I read yours? I like your insights and the way you write and what you write about. Your list of to buy is always a plus. I like that your blog is different in that it give me a break from others who I like and enjoy reading and the ideas. I’m probably not all that helpful! Happy New Year!

  3. Lots to digest and think about. Thanks for sharing. I say BS on no lifestyle blog. Keep doing what you are doing! Happy New Year. The only time I’m awake til midnight is when I’m trying to finish a post

  4. I like everything about your blog because it has a little bit of this and that-recipes, books, things you’ve bought or liked. I like your aesthetic and taste. But most of all I like the articles you post on Fridays. They are from many different sources and I find them thought-provoking. I will be doing some remodeling this year and am interested in reading about your home projects.

  5. So many great questions to inspire reflection. Thank you for sharing! I hope you enjoy your night in with some delicious cocktails. <3 Happy New Year, friend!

  6. I love you being you. I consider you a friend and a fellow blogger and I feel like I’ve known you for a long time. I never stay up until midnight and don’t really celebrate. I know that’s not a surprise. You have given yourself the gift of a new home. And I know that’s one thing you’d been aiming for for a few years. So that objective can be ticked off your list.

  7. WHO SAYS THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A LIFESTYLE BLOGGER?
    GOOGLE?!!
THIS WAS A GOOD POST ONE OF YOUR BEST AS I ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS AS I READ THEM………
    IT WAS EASY FOR ME!
THE BLOGS THAT ARE BORING ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE a TEMPLATE shall we say and they” fill in the blank each and every time!” A lot of those blogs REPEAT the same THINGS EACH SEASON YEAR AFTER YEAR……..
There is NO HEART AND SOUL IN THEM!I find them VERY REPETITIVE and when you have been reading for years……………..well it gets uninteresting.
I am at an AGE where I have done my home.I don’t bake much as I am Gluten Free and I have been told by my FUNCTIONAL DOCTOR not to EAT GF ITEMS as there is MORE CRAP IN THOSE ITEMS THAT ARENOT HEALTHY.Recipes are interesting to me as I am always looking for something new to cook!Animals of course as they are MANS BEST FRIENDS!A bit of fashion if it is DIFFERENT from what we see day in and day out!
Honestly I do not know how the designers are going to stay in business as I see the same things on people all the time! One last comment On Instagram this year and I do not recall who but the family was all in black and Grey from the Granny down very very casual……………MADE ME SAD!Thats your CHRISTMAS CARD?NO hat no dash of RED no interest what so ever……….for us who do not know YOU.I know I have different EXPECTATIONS but I think if WE HAD MORE FUN AS A SOCIETY WE WOULD BE IN A MUCH BETTER PLACE WORLDWIDE!

  9. I love these questions! My favorite part of your blog is your Friday post. I love how you post interesting articles to read and other things to pay attention to. I also love your recipes and how you share wonderful rooms to look at.
Thanks for all of your hard work.

  10. Great post! Make the most you can of your life so you don’t have regrets down the road. I especially appreciated what you said about “no rush to shove Christmas in a closet.” Happy New Year!

    1. Lynda, thank you! Enjoy life, that is what it is all about. If you are a person that doesn’t like your tree up after Christmas put it away conversely, if you are a person that likes to leave it up until February leave it up. There should not be judgement from everyone about our lives.
Have a wonderful day and a very Happy New Year.

  11. I used these questions over much of the last year. I started them again this month and am also asking my husband this year. Funny, the first question What brings you joy? I answered last year “a new project”. Well we just moved into a worn out but beautiful house with a gazzilion projects before the holidays so last year’s answer gave me perspective and confirmation in my present overwhelm. Thank you

    1. Pamela, congratulations on your new house! A gazillion projects to make this special place your own is a wonderful thing. We moved 3 years ago and we have never lived in the entire house, it has been one project after another. Hopefully this year it will be “finished”.
I find these reflection questions illuminating, because in life we often stumble or able along and we know that something is off or not making us happy or life life as it should be but we don’t know what. IT is always a good time to reflect, and to get back on track.

      Happy New Year.
Keep us posted on your house and feel free to share more about what you are doing, designing, diy, etc.
