MONDAY MUSINGS

Good morning musings friends, how was your weekend? Did you have a nice Easter? We spent the day with family and that is always fun. Lots of laughs, good food and a few jelly beans too.

It was another busy weekend here, lots of fun but busy. I feel like Easter Monday should be a holiday here in the states as it is in other countries.

Friday just before the rains came I seeded my wildflower meadow. I might have waited if I realized we were going to have heavy rain and cold for 2 days. Hopefully they didn’t wash away. The good news is that I have more seeds and now that it stopped raining for a few days I think I will sprinkle a few more seeds.

My meadow has been a labor of love as well as an experiment. Last year I planted 1/4 of the plot and it was a success so this year I decided to plant the entire thing. It turned out to be a bit more of a challenge that I thought, so my husband stepped in to help with the tilling. In the center I planted traditional cottage garden flowers and around the rest of the plot I planted native wildflower seeds from the South( off which I am not too familiar with). It will be like Christmas when they start coming up.

We also planted a few more containers and I planted potatoes! Why? I have no idea but I have always wanted to grow potatoes. I have been given detailed instructions by a 90 year old farmer and am hoping I can grow at least one to take to show him. Sweet potatoes are also being planted. I eat them every day so I thought I would try to grown them as well. If any of you have experience with growing potatoes in a planted/barrel please share your tips.

Do you have a green thumb? Are you a gardener? What are your favorite things to plant? Do you have some tips to share? If so, please leave them in the comments so that we can all benefit.

Ok, on to +5 things!

1.Read

Just finished this book and really enjoyed it.

The Fair Botanists

Could one rare plant hold the key to a thousand riches?

It’s the summer of 1822 and Edinburgh is abuzz with rumours of King George IV’s impending visit. In botanical circles, however, a different kind of excitement has gripped the city. In the newly-installed Botanic Garden, the Agave Americana plant looks set to flower – an event that only occurs once every few decades.

When newly widowed Elizabeth arrives in Edinburgh to live with her late husband’s aunt Clementina, she’s determined to put her unhappy past in London behind her. As she settles into her new home, she becomes fascinated by the beautiful Botanic Garden which borders the grand house and offers her services as an artist to record the rare plant’s impending bloom. In this pursuit, she meets Belle Brodie, a vivacious young woman with a passion for botany and the lucrative, dark art of perfume creation.

Belle is determined to keep both her real identity and the reason for her interest the Garden secret from her new friend. But as Elizabeth and Belle are about to discover, secrets don’t last long in this Enlightenment city . . .
