FRIDAY FAVORITES NO. 584
Good morning friends, happy Friday.
It has been a week of bad weather hasn’t it. Sever thunderstorms, tornados, hail and lots more all over the country. For most of the week here, the weather was above normal and hot, then late yesterday afternoon the storms rolled in. I don’t mind telling you that when the wind picked up and the pines started to sway I was a little afraid. I don’t need another tree on the house.
Thankfully we survived with only limbs and pinecones down, so many others in Oklahoma, Michigan and other states were not so lucky. If you were one of them, I hope that you are ok and if you suffered damage I hope that it is fixed soon.
What are your plans for the weekend? My niece is in town for Mother’s Day and we have a list of fun things planned a mile long. I cannot wait!
Ok, let’s get to all of my favorites from this week.
FOOD
In honor of National Shrimp day I thought I would share a few recipes that you might enjoy. Full disclosure, I do not eat shrimp or anything that lives in water so I have no experience with how these recipes will taste. My husband however loves shrimp and said they all look delicious!
Chipotle shrimp rice bowls, with guacamole and the toppings of your choice. An easy lunch or dinner.
Shrimp Avocado Salad, a high protein summer salad. So Good!
Red Pepper Fettuccine with Shrimp! The perfect quick and easy dinner for friends and family.
Rhubarb Mint Mojito a refreshing cocktail to start the weekend.

BOOKS
These are the books I currently have on order from Amazon or at the library or have recently read. What are you reading or waiting to be released?
Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries, and Just One More Page Before Lights Out
We read to escape, to learn, to find love, to feel seen. We read to encounter new worlds, to discover new recipes, to find connection across difference, or simply to pass a rainy afternoon. No matter the reason, books have the power to keep us safe, to challenge us, and perhaps most importantly, to make us more fully human.
Shannon Reed, a longtime teacher, lifelong reader, and New Yorker contributor, gets it. With one simple goal in mind, she makes the case that we should read for pleasure above all else. In this whip-smart, laugh-out-loud-funny collection, Reed shares surprising stories from her life as a reader and the poignant ways in which books have impacted her students. From the varied novels she cherishes (Gone Girl, Their Eyes Were Watching God) to the ones she didn’t (Tess of the d’Urbervilles), Reed takes us on a rollicking tour through the comforting world of literature, celebrating the books we love, the readers who love them, and the ways in which literature can transform us for the better.
The Summer Book Club
The rules of summer book club are simple:
- No sad books
- No pressure
- Yessssss, wine!
Besties Laurel and Paris are excited to welcome Cassie to the group. This year, the book club is all about fill-your-heart reads, an escape from the chaos of the everyday—running a business, raising a family, juggling a hundred to-dos. Even the dog is demanding (but the bestest boy).
Since Laurel’s divorce, she feels like the Worst Mom Ever. Her skepticism of men may have scarred her vulnerable daughters. Cassie has an unfortunate habit of falling for ridiculous man-boys who dump her once she fixes them. Paris knows good men exist. She’s still reeling after chasing off the only one brave enough—and foolish enough—to marry her.
Inspired by the heroines who risk everything for fulfillment, Laurel, Paris and Cassie begin to take chances—big chances—in life, in love. Facing an unwritten chapter can be terrifying. But it can be exhilarating, too, if only they can find the courage to change.
The Book of Charlie
When a veteran Washington journalist moved to Kansas, he met a new neighbor who was more than a century old. Little did he know that he was beginning a long friendship—and a profound lesson in the meaning of life. Charlie White was no ordinary neighbor. Born before radio, Charlie lived long enough to use a smartphone. When a shocking tragedy interrupted his idyllic boyhood, Charlie mastered survival strategies that reflect thousands of years of human wisdom. Thus armored, Charlie’s sense of adventure carried him on an epic journey of the Jazz Age, racing aboard ambulances through Depression-era gangster wars, improvising techniques for early open-heart surgery, and cruising the Amazon as a guest of Peru’s president.
David Von Drehle came to understand that Charlie’s resilience and willingness to grow made this remarkable neighbor a master in the art of thriving through times of dramatic change. As a gift to his children, he set out to tell Charlie’s secrets. The Book of Charlie is a “genuinely original, formula-shattering” (Bob Woodward) gospel of grit—the inspiring story of one man’s journey through a century of upheaval. The history that unfolds through Charlie’s story reminds you that the United States has always been a divided nation, a questing nation—a nation of Charlies in the rollercoaster pursuit of a good and meaningful life.

OUTFIT OF THE DAY
Gingham is a summer classic. This bright blue and white skirt will certainly make a statement this season. Pair it with a white t-shirt or sweater and you are set for whatever adventure you have planned. I like this bright skirt with white accents, sandals and a straw bag but you could also add yellow to the mix.
