Sardine Core, Toy Hill House, Le Deluge and more on Weekend Meanderings.

Weekend Meanderings
Good Saturday morning friends. It’s time for Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet. Join us as we share all of the things that piqued our interests and caught our eye this week.
How was your week? I tagged along with my husband on a trip to Tennessee. While he attended a workshop at Heartwood Forge I explored Jonesboro(the oldest town in TN, and home to the International Storytelling Festival) and Johnson City. It rained every day that we were there so I spent a lot of time dodging the rain but I still had a great time. Jonesboro is a small quaint town with little shops, cafe’s and a brewery.

Johnson City is a city with lots to see and do, especially if you love the great outdoors. You can visit Buffalo Mountain, or Tweetsie Trails to bike or hike, go to the railroad museum, shop, eat and more.
We drove to TN from NC and the damage from Hurricane Helene is still being cleaned up and repaired. There were random piles of debris, and felled trees stacked on the sides of the road and the river.
In other areas along the river you could see places where houses once stood and now there was a grill and a camper. Downed trees were still on a couple of houses and businesses. Driving along in one area there was a debris field coming down the side of a hill, it looked like the contents of a house, there were clothes, books, appliances and furniture.

The erosion along the river where the raging water tore away the banks was shocking. I cannot imagine how the people felt watching the water rise and wondering if it was going to reach their house. In some parts you could see piles of trees that has been snapped off by the raging water like they were match sticks on the banks of the river
In other parts, The Department of Transportation was hard at work installing wire mesh to control the rockfall. I cannot adequately describe what I saw because I have never seen anything like it. All of this is to say that even though the people of WNC and TN are no longer on the news they are still trying to piece their lives and businesses back together and can use our prayers.
Ok, let’s meander friends.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Toy Hill House
Do you like architecture? What kind? Are you a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright? I have been lucky enough to visit his first home and studio in Chicago as well as several other of the houses he built. This week I was thrilled to see AD visit Toy Hill House and to learn more about it, as well as, to see how the current owners use the house and are preserving it for future generations.
Mr. Morgan’s Last Love
I don’t know how I missed Mr. Morgan’s Last Love when it came out over 10 years ago but I am so happy that I recently found it. This may be my new favorite movie, after all it’s set in Paris, and features Sir Michael Caine.
Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers
200 years after its opening and a century after acquiring its first Van Gogh works, the National Gallery hosted the UK’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition (14 September 2024 – 19 January 2025). The exhibition was a huge success, universally praised by the press and tickets quickly sold out, making this film the only way to see what Forbes called “a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition”.
Explore the passion which drove one of the world’s favourite artists to change art forever. Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers rewrites the narrative and celebrates Van Gogh’s genius without exploiting his suffering, enabling its audience to truly understand this iconic artist in a brand new way.
If you are a Francophile, enjoy French history and love Sofia Coopla’s Marie Antoinette, then you are going to want to bookmark this film.
Le Deluge(The Flood) is a historical drama that stars Guillaume Canet and Melanie Laurent as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. They have been imprisoned in Tour du Temple with their family as they await trial and eventually execution. The film is based upon the journal of Louis XVI’s valet Clery.
Sardine Core

This year Pinterest predicted that the Fishman aesthetic would be dominating our Spring wardrobes. Slouchy cable-knit sweaters, blue and white stripes, fisherman sandals, and waxed jackets are staples of the look. Now a new trend has spawned and has moved into interior design and decor, lately everywhere I look are fish.

Is it Sardine-core? Tined fish decor? I have no idea but I do know that sardine home decor and fish prints are a very popular addition to your home this summer, from wallpaper, to wall art I am sharing some of my favorite pieces just in case you want to add one or two to your home or wardrobe.

This isn’t your father’s fish camp decor this look is whimsical, colorful and reminiscent of the beautiful tined fish and sardines sold in Portugal, Spain and in the Mediterranean. You can fine all of the items in the collage and more at the bottom of the post.

Next up, another lemon bread. I know what you’re thinking another one? I promise that this recipe is different and will quickly become a family favorite.

This preserved lemon tea cake, it is sweet a little briny from the preserved lemons and it is scrumptious.

Last but not least, Friday Favorites! Books, recipes(this steak bowl), decor, fashion(like this matched set outfit) and so much more.

UNTIL NEXT TIME
I hope that you enjoyed weekend meanderings. If you did please share the post on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter or Pinterest.

On My Radar~Sardine Core

So many wonderful films to watch. For once I’m ahead in what is trending, I purchased a medium size platter with sardines on it last year and hosted a lunch with delicious canned fish from Portugal. It was so fun.
Rita, canned fish is huge in Europe. They say it is better than fresh caught. I have been to places Spain where they serve fish in the tins. I personally do not eat seafood but it does look beautiful.
Thanks for the bit about fish decor. With the last name of Fish, our daughters were mercilessly teased growing up. Now adults they embrace the name!
Sue, I can only imagine how cruel people were to your daughters. Fish is a wonderful name!
Sardine Core! I love it … and I really do love those beautiful fish pitchers. How great you got to tag along with your husband … and to the oldest town in TN. Bummer about the rain but I’m sure it was delightful anyway. That two story house or cabin is really something. Beautiful capture. It’s heartbreaking to hear about the devastation in NC. It seems big natural disasters like this get 15 minutes of news time and then we move on while the clean up and rebuilding of lives goes on for years. I’m intrigued by The Deluge, thanks for the rec. I’m sure it feels good to be home. Enjoy the weekend. xo
Elizabeth, Loved that you got away to Tennessee. What kind of workshop is your husband into? He sounds crafty. Love that old cabin, so beautiful. I hope it was fun. It is sad to hear there is so much devastation still there. I really hope they get more assistance. I know they still need government help. It is just terrible.
Love the videos and putting these films on my list. Sardine core is cute. Reminds me of some kitchen things I bought in Positano that I love. This short outfit is darling.
Hope your weekend is lovely! xo
I can’t say I’ve of sardine decor, but I will say it’s whimsical! I always love the outfits you put together. The Midnight Bakery is on my list!
Isn’t it fun Kim? I love the whimsy.
You will love THE MIDNIGHT Bakery.
Glad you had the opportunity to get away for a short time. Sad to hear that NC and TN are still dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Helene. And oh my… the article on the price of remission. I need to read through it again after my heart stops pounding! Thank you for the insightful links.
Hi Elizabeth,
It’s always good to get away for a change of scenery. To see the devastation done by Hurricane was sad to see. What water damage does to an area is pretty alarming. The force of water rips up trees, foot solid bridges. Takes cars and can people in their path.
We witnessed this the morning of our 100 year flood in Oak Creek Canyon many years ago. Our SUV was loaded to visit our retreat and we turned around to the Valley after seeing what an excess of water can do.
I don’t think I’ve seen Mr. Morgan’s Last Love. I bet that is great. Michael Caine is an excellent actor.
Have a fabulous weekend.
Katherine, the devastation was heartbreaking. Especially as so many do not have insurance. I hope that your retreat did not suffer any damage in the 100 year flood. That sounds terrifying.
Mr.Morgans’ Last Love it beautiful, I hope the you can watch it.
Have a wonderful week!
Thanks so much for including the video on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Toy Hill House!! I found it most interesting!!
Cynthia, you are very welcome. I am glad that you enjoyed it.
