Good morning friends! Can you believe that this weekend is Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer? Sitting in bed this morning typing this post you would not know that summer is on its way, the rain is lashing the windows, the temperatures are almost 20 below normal and the wind has been ferocious the last two days. Last night it was so bad I thought the roof would peel off or that we would loose a few trees at least. There is better weather ahead and of course a long holiday weekend means lots of sun, food and desserts.
Strawberries remind me of summer, their scent, taste and feel take me back to early mornings picking them with my sisters at our first summer job. Thinking back I think the same number of berries that went in the baskets went into our bellies. There is nothing like the taste of a sun ripened berry still warm as you take your first bite. The simple act of tossing them with sugar transports me to my grandmothers side where that was my job as she made short cakes with my sisters.
This past week my husband and I took a drive and came upon many strawberry fields ready to be picked. Sadly we couldn’t do it ourselves because of the restrictions but we were able to purchase a few quarts from the farm stand. We have eaten them plain, in a cake, on shortcakes and on toast.

Strawberries are good plain but I LOVE strawberry shortcake. There is a u-pick farm near us; I will have to call to find out what is going on there.
