Good Saturday morning friends! Today I am joining Kim and Juliet for weekend meanderings, our weekly series of things that caught our eye and piqued our interest.

It’s a busy day of celebrations to day. The Coronation of King Charles and the Kentucky Derby will be celebrated and enjoyed by many. Have you been up early taking in all of the pomp and circumstance of the Coronation?

I skipped the Coronation, I am sure that I will see snippets of it on and off all day on the internet. As for the Kentucky Derby, I will be watching it live.

We love the horses and the history. did you know that the Kentucky Derby is the longest running sporting event in the United States, it dates back to 1875.

Here is another piece of Derby trivia that you may or may not have know, the Kentucky Derby was started by the grandson of William Clark of Lewis and Clark.

Ok, enough of the trivia let’s get to the good stuff!

WEEKEND MEANDERINGS.

Although Instagram can be annoying with its ever changing algorithm it is still a wonderful place to discover new and interesting people, Frances Palmer is one of them. I recently discovered Frances when I came across her feed and fell in love with her beautiful ceramics and flowers.

Frances Palmer

Trained as an art historian, but always an artist who loved to work with her hands. First as a printmaker and now as a potter, gardener and photographer. Her work has been featured in ever major shelter or garden magazine since 1992, including AD, House & Garden, World of Interiors, Veranda and the list goes on and on and on.

Although I love her ceramics, I myself am drawn to her photography which remind me of the Still Life paintings of the Old Masters. I am also in love with all of the beautiful flowers that she growns, especially the dahlias. Instead of paint Francis creates her beautiful images starting witha piece of her pottery and then adds flowers from her cutting garden.

You can purchase a piece of Frances Palmer pottery from her website, recreate her art at home with a puzzle and you can also get more information about her speaking engagements.

Mark D. Sikes for Anthropologie

“Celebrated for his fresh and unique interpretations of classic American aesthetics, the esteemed interior designer evokes layers and lived in charm doe both your home and your closet.”

Mark D Sikes Anthropologie

Mark D. Sikes is an amazingly talented designer, and creator. I can remember years ago(over 12) when he had a blog and designed the “it” blue and white dress everyone was wearing, as well as his feature in Lonny magazine. He has since moved on to bigger projects around the world and it has been a joy to follow along and see his ever expanding portfolio.

In addition to his interior design work for private clients he continues to make his iconic blue and white designer available to the masses with collaborations. Like this one with Anthropologie. You can also find him at Annie Selkie, and Schumacher.

If blue and white is one of your favorite color combinations you will enjoy this collection. I love the dinner plates, the sheet sets and the pillows in this Anthropologie collection. There are also dresses, robes and pants.

Check out the rug collaboration with Annie Selkie too.

Mark has also written 2 books!

Derby Drinks

weekend meanderings derby drinks mint-julep.

Mint Julep

The mint julep is “the” iconic and classic cocktail of the Kentucky Derby. I made this one and served it to my husband in a vintage Kentucky Derby julep cup from the 1930’s. Nearly, 120,000 mint juleps are sold during Kentucky Derby weekend, according to the site.

Oaks Lily

The Oaks lily is my favorite cocktail! It’s light and refreshing and great for summer entertaining as well.

Sweet tea in a pitcher with a glass alongside.

Sweet Tea

Sweet tea isn’t just for the Derby, quench your thirst all year long, especially on hot summer days.

If cocktails aren’t your thing you can check out my favorite Derby food or make this scrumptious Krispy Kreme Bourbon Pecan Bread Pudding instead.

  1. Yes, got up at 4am to watch the King’s Coronation! Such an historic event, one of world wide ceremony, inclusion & reach, both across religions & nations. If ever one could immerse themselves in wonderful “news” and goodness, this was it….if you’re into that sort of thing, of course 🙂

    1. Shelia, I love the Royals and could not agree with you more about the beautiful ceremony. The only reason I did not get up to watch is because we have guests and stayed up way too late last night. I have been watching the snippets and replays and it is nice to see all of the happy, cheering faces and the pride of a country come together. Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Elizabeth, You always find the coolest people! Frances is someone I did not know about. What amazing pictures she makes and pretty pottery. I went down the rabbit hole with that! I adore Mark and his books. Wish he still made clothes. I have his blue dishes and love them.
Hope you had a nice visit with your mom. Enjoy watching the coronation. I had fun seeing the photos of all the outfits and the kids of course. I will try and catch the Derby! My husband is from Kentucky and I would love to go someday. My friend had a party one year and we all had so much fun. Love any excuse to wear hats!
    Have a beautiful weekend !

P.S. Love all your links and clicking over to your MDay gift ideas..

    1. Elizabeth, Frances is amazing, as is her book. The perfect gift for Mother’s Day. It is interesting that she did not take up pottery until she was 30. How fun to see Mark D. Sikes! He is always impeccably dressed.
      Hope you are feeling good!

  4. Elizabeth,
I too love the work of Frances Palmer. A few years ago she had a sale in her barn….still very expensive, but her work is stunning. And her garden of dahlias.

  5. Hope you had a great weekend, Elizabeth! I’m late getting here because I was away … so I missed the Coronation and the Derby. But I caught up with the Coronation yesterday. Other than the weather it went off without a hitch. Wonder why Harry bothered to show up at all, other than to collect payment from Dior for wearing their suit. That’s snarky, I know. But I just can’t get over his immaturity and willingness to smear is family publicly. The rest of us handle our family issues, and we all have them, privately or with our closets friends. Anyhoo … those drink ideas sure look refreshing and wonderful. See you next Saturday! xo
