Summer takes me back to my childhood where I went to “sleep away camp”, spent long weekends at the family cabin swimming and boating and water skiing.

There were many days spent reading, playing tennis, camping and biking and making s’mores over the bonfire.

Summer to me is also about food, popsicles, homemade ice cream, tomato tarts, burgers, potato salad, my grandmothers angle food cake and berries and picnics at the beach.

I love summer, childhood memories of riding my pony all day long, it's funny it never seemed to rain! What do I love best? Reading a book or a magazine in the shade by the pool or on the beach. I never usually get the chance to sit still and do this and so when it happens it seems like the biggest luxury in the world!

I remember eating bowls of cherries at my grandma's, in the dark living room, where the window A/C unit hummed. It was a cool cave, a respite from the syrupy humidity outside. Although outside, it was fun to squish the black tar she used in the cracks on the driveway; it would get so soft in the heat.
Here, I love the smell of the pines when it's hot. It's more pronounced, and it's perfumed with the other scents of the garrigue, like wild thyme and wild rosemary. We go into the garrigue when it's hot for a picnic under the pines, and listen to them whistle and sing in the wind.

GOod morning dear Elizabeth!
I am glad I am not the only one. I am glad I am not odd in believing and FEELING that summer brings back childhood memories. Being a teacher, I am so fortunate to work hard during the fall and winter months and a bit into spring, but summer is a gift to be taken. It's on a summer day that I am free like no other time during the year to enter into my "time capsule" that takes me back to the hot streets of Los Angeles where I played with friends as we hosed each other down with our hoses meeting in the street. I retrace my steps as I walk to the market and I remember walking with my mother to the shopping center (this was before malls) and I am a child again. Thank GOD for summer, thank GOD for memories.
Relive all that is wonderful to you and see it all again through the eyes of an adult who can doubly appreciate it all!
