MUSINGS

Good Monday morning friends! After a beautiful, sunny Spring weekend today is gray and overcast. The perfect excuse to stay inside, catch up on laundry, work and whatever else needs to be taken care of.

We had a busy weekend, a mixture of fun and work. Friday we had drinks with friends and then watched a movie. Saturday I was in the kitchen experimenting with a few sour dough discard recipes.

A few months ago my husband decided to become a bread maker. He started with a video by Apollonia Poilâne on MasterClass  then purchased her cookbook and since then he has been experimenting with different recipes. So far he has had mixed results.

The sourdough discard is mind to use and I have made crackers, cakes and breads. Once I perfect the recipes I will share them with you.

Sunday we spent outside cleaning beds, pruning the arbor and keeping the dogs from playing with the sunning snakes.

Gardening

I am finished potting all of the plants I purchased. I tend to be overzealous with flowers and then when it comes time to pot them up I lose momentum. Then I planted my 2 white potatoes seed potato segments in large pots, following the advice I received from a farmer I met. After the, I planted 2 sweet potatoes in large pots( just in case the others continue to be eaten by deer) peppers, lettuce, and tomatoes. My herbs garden is well established as I planted that last year.

Now I am starting a few seeds. I know it seems late but I’ve been told I can start the seeds and then plant them in the fall.

Ok, on to +5 things!

Monday Musings Sugar & Salt

Sugar and Salt

Jerome Sugar learned the art of baking in his grandma’s bakery, also called Sugar, on historic Perdita Street in San Francisco. He supplies baked goods to the Lost and Found Bookshop across the street.

When the restaurant that shares his commercial kitchen loses its longtime tenant, a newcomer moves in: Margot Salton, a barbecue master from Texas.

Margot isn’t exactly on the run, but she needs a fresh start. She’s taken care of herself her whole life, pulling herself up by her fingernails to recover from trauma, and her dream has been to open a restaurant somewhere far, far from Texas. The shared kitchen with Jerome’s Sugar bakery is the perfect setup: a state-of-the-art kitchen and a vibrant neighborhood popular with tourists and locals.

Margot instantly takes to Jerome’s mother, the lively, opinionated Ida. The older woman proves to be a good mentor, and Margot is drawn to Jerome. Despite their different backgrounds their attraction is powerful—even though Jerome worries that Margot will simply move on from him once she’s found some peace and stability. But just as she starts to relax into a happy new future, Margot’s past in Texas comes back to haunt her…

  1. Keeping the dogs from the snakes! EEK…you are brave my friend! Have fun with the bread making process. I used to make bread with my machine quite often but havent in a very long time. Thanks so much for sharing my post on perserverance! Have a wonderful week!

  2. The first time I had Sourdough bread was from a bakery in my province’s cottage country. I loved it.

  3. Elizabeth, I have subscribed to your blog after reading a comment you left on Brenda’s blog at Cozy Little House which I have read for a long time. I like what I see so far, including the book review and look forward to seeing more posts. The only thing I had a negative response to was the photo of you that introduces your blog. It is so stern and sort of dour-looking. I don’t mean to be hyper-critical, but I have trouble believing it really reflects the person who writes the up-lifting and creative content of your blog. I would like to see a photo of you smiling and looking directly at the camera. Just for what it’s worth. Feel free to let me know your response to this feedback if you wish.

    1. Naomi, welcome to Pinecones & Acorns! Thank you for subscribing! I too am a longtime reader of Brenda’s blog. I hope that you find something each time you read the blog to enjoy!
You are not the first person to mention the photo. To be honest, I do not like to have my photo taken. I will be changing the image in the near future. In the meantime, welcome and have a wonderful night.
