WEEKEND MEANDERINGS

Good Saturday morning to you friends. It’s time for Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet! This is our weekly series where we share all of the things that piqued our interests and caught our eye.

House Update

It’s hot, is anyone else hot? The first day of summer brought with it the hot, sunny weather we love…for a day and then spend the next few weeks complaining and counting the days until Fall. Hot weather zaps my energy, and motivation.

It could be that or I am tired of living in a mess and having a hole in the house. Aside from the mouse, bugs are infiltrating as well. Unfortunately nothing can be done until the hole is fixed.

On that note, we have a start date for the tree damage repairs. July 1st they will tear out the rest of the ceiling on 1/2 of the room and repair the trusses(fingers crossed it isn’t worse than we think), then they will repair the hole in the roof. After that we need to have an inspection before we can proceed.

Following  the inspection they will remove all of the sheetrock from the front inside wall of the house(hopefully there is no mold and mildew from all of the rain), repair/replace 4 windows and then put the roof on, put in a new ceiling and wall and of course repair the bricks and soffits in the front of the house. I know I am forgetting some things but that is where we are at now.

Ok, enough about me, let’s meander.

National Pollinator Week

This week is National Pollinator week, “a celebration of the vital role that pollinators play in our ecosystems, economies, and agriculture.”

It is the perfect time to add pollinator flowers and attractors to your garden and containers to help the pollinators survive and thrive. Our food and the natural beauty in the world depends upon these little creatures.

Pollinator Facts You Might Know

  • Pollinators include, flies, bees, moths and butterflies, beatles, mosquitos, wind, water, birds, and even some shrimp. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are some of the most recognizable pollinators and the ones we love. But bats and moths are important nighttime pollinators.
  • There are estimated to be 20,000 different species of bees in the world, 250 are bumblebees, 500-600 are stingless bees, 7 are honeybees and the rest are solitary bees. Learn more about bees here.
  • We have 4,000 species of bees in North America.
  • Honeybees are the primary commercial pollinators in the US. They are an introduced species, not native to North America.
  • Most native bees are solitary, meaning they nest alone, rather than in a hive like honeybees. Bumblebees are the exception, as they nest in small groups of 50 to 400.
  • More than 100 U.S. grown crops rely on pollinators including almonds, non-citrus fruit trees, berries, melons, and squash.

How can you help the pollinators?

  • Fill your yard with native plants.
  • Offer bees a nesting place. Most bees do not live in hives they live and lay eggs in tunnels that they create in sandy soil, or decaying tress. You can offer them a home by leaving dead trees on your property or by adding a bee house to your garden.
  • Don’t use pesticide.
  • Plant milkweed. The Monarch butterfly population has declined 90% over the last 20 years. Milkweed, the plant that monarchs lay their eggs on was killed off by pesticides. In the past milkweed grew between the rows of corn, soybean and other crops but because of extensive use of pesticides the butterflies can’t complete their lifecycle and grow from a caterpillar into a butterfly.
  • Add wildflowers and bee friendly flowers to your garden, containers, vacant lots, fields, community gardens, balconies rooftops and any other place you can plant flowers.
  • At the end of the season leave some yard debris, like leaves, and spent flowers and foliage for the pollinators to winter in, many pollinators hibernate for the winter.

  1. Elizabeth, I hope things get better soon with the construction. The hardest thing is living in the house while it is happening. I’m keeping good thoughts it’ll go fast and be great!
Love these two outfits.. the black top is my thing. I need more cute pieces like this.
I am sorry I missed the ice cream with you and Sherry. I will add it to my blog for next week! It’s a great one for the fourth and looks really cute.
I love the pollinator encouragement. We get a lot in our yard and I know it is because of the plants and no pesticides or sprays. It seems the more you get, the more come and find sanctuary!
Hope you have a lovely week. xo

  2. Dear Elizabeth,
I’m very empathetic what you are going facing with your home. Going through a demolition to part of your house and not to mention the roof it’s huge to handle it all. We have gone through this many times and it’s a dusty dirty mess. When you are tired and are faced with heat and humidity it does zap your every and it can be a big demoter. Yesterday in Arizona it was 113 degrees. We are about an hour and fifteen minutes from the airport so it was a little cooler. I will never forget June 26, 1990 it was 122 degrees and I was determined to go out in the heat to visit clients almost two hours away. My husband Bear begged me not to go, my tires could blow on the freeway. I was never so happy to arrive back home. The heat is oppressive, and can kill you if you don’t stay hydrated even being inside with air conditioning.
You remain in my thoughts. I’m sure everything you picked out is beautiful. You remain in my thoughts.
Rest up and have a lively weekend.
    Sending you a big hug.

  3. Oh Elizabeth, I really feel for you and everything you’ve gone through and continue to deal with trying to put your house back together. And a heatwave on top of it all … it’s just too much. I feel you about the heat. We’ve been fortunate (knock wood) to have had a fairly mild spring and summer so far. The heat really gets to me and I’m less tolerant of it the older I get. When I saw your blog title about the Rhode collab my first thought was Hailey Bieber because I (only just) learned she has a cosmetic brand called Rhode. Anyway, I see it’s also the name of a lifestyle brand not Bieber related and I loved looking through all the beautiful pieces. Especially love the bedding. Thanks for the heads up on pollinator month, I’m going outside and thank all the queen bees buzzing around our new plantings. It makes me happy to see them in abundance enjoying the blooms. Looks like I’ll need to make room for The Joy of Home. I never met a decor book I didn’t love. Hope you have a great weekend and that it cool off. xo

  4. I feel your pain with the house situation…but you sure can pull off a lovely post in spite of it. I’m going to order Ashley’s book. Take care!
