Weekend Meanderings

Good Saturday morning friends. It’s time for Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet. Join us as we share all of the things that piqued our interests and caught our eye this week.

Did you watch the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics? What did you think? I loved it! The ballet dancers, the tribute to Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini and Gioachino Rossini with their big bobble heads and of course, Andrea Bocelli. There were many other memorable moments but those were my favorites.

What is your favorite Olympic sport? I enjoy watching most of the sports, but my favorites are ice skating and skiing. It’s funny because years ago I had favorite athletes that I rooted for, now I do not know anyone but Lindsey Von. Oh well, it is still fun to watch and to root for the home team.

As I mentioned yesterday after almost 2 weeks my husband Bill is feeling better, ironically this morning I woke with a pounding headache and a sore throat. My only plan for the day is staying in bed and resting.

Ok, let’s meander.

Analog Bag.

The Analog Bag

If you’ve been online lately, you may have seen the “analog bag” trend. An analog bag, the term coined by Tik Tok content creator Sierra Campbell, is a tote filled with books, notebooks, pens, puzzles, paints, knitting, and other non-digital items. Basically, it’s a bag.

The kind many of us have hauled to work(to carry papers, shoes, lunch), in the carpool line(with snacks and wipes), the library(to haul our books back and forth), and on the sidelines for decades.

Everything old is new again, as they say, and I am happy to see a move away from tech and back to the basics. If giving it a name helps people remember that not everything in life needs a battery, is an app or found scrolling social media for hours on end, I’m all for it.

The analog bag is about choosing real, physical things instead of a phone. It’s deciding you don’t need to be on call for the internet all day or checking your phone a gazillion times a day.

Here’s what my version of an analog bag contains, simple, comforting, and useful items that I reach for again and again. I travel with many of these items in my carry-on, on road trips and when I have appointments.

  1. A real book, newspaper or a stack of magazines
A dog-eared favorite with a bookmark, a book borrowed from the library or a pile of the latest magazines.

  2. A small notebook
For to-do lists, thoughts, quotes, words or that one sentence I don’t want to forget.

  3. A good pen
Could be a fancy fountain pen or just a reliable gel pen.

  4. Journal
A gratitude journal, composition book or just a journal to write your thoughts

  5. A scarf, cashmere wrap and socks
    To stay warm and cosy.

  6. Lip balm, hand lotion
Chapped lips and dry hands are painful and these two items come in handy.

  7. A small wallet with actual cards and a little cash
Cash for when the card reader is down and a credit card for everything else.

  8. Cards
A stack of cards to send snail mail, birthday, thank you or just a hello.

  9. Mints, gum, snacks
I never travel without snacks. Gum and mints for fresh breath and to share with friends.

  10. Word Finder Puzzle Books
    To challenge my mind.

  11. Camera

None of this is groundbreaking. The beauty of the analog bag is how ordinary it is. It reminds us that we already know how to live and enjoy life without the constant pull and distraction of the phone.

If you’re carrying one already, welcome to the trend you helped invent. And if not, maybe this is your nudge to pack a bag, put down the phone and enjoy the little things in life.

What’s in yours? Puzzles, a deck of cards, sketch books, water color paint kits, a crochet kit, sudoko or puzzle books?

It is the sweet simple things of life which are the real ones after all., Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Movie

H is for Hawk

When Helen’s beloved father passes away, she is knocked sideways by grief and loses herself in memories of their time birding and exploring the natural world together. She becomes obsessed with the idea of training her own goshawk, and so she brings the fearsome bird Mabel home to her life as a graduate fellow at Cambridge. Helen fills the freezer with hawk food and turns off her phone, ready to embark on the long, strange business of trying to train this wildest of animals. But as she labours to tame Mabel, a grieving Helen undergoes an untaming of her own. A record of a spiritual journey, H IS FOR HAWK is a story about memory and nature and how it might be possible to reconcile death with life and love.

Hawk is in theaters now, no streaming information available.

Poilâne

Poilâne is one of my favorite place is Paris to buy bread and punitons. On this episode of Fishwives in Paris, Apollonia Poilâne shares the history of their iconic bread.

If you have a trip planned to Paris be sure to visit Poilâne, and if you have Master Class be sure to watch Apollonias’ bread baking classes.

The Snow Owls of Logan Airport

Norman Smith has dedicated his life to protecting and relocating the snowy owls from Boston’s busiest airport runways. Called “the Owl Man of Logan Airport,” Smith has single-handedly relocated more than 900 snowy owls, creating the blueprint for how airports across the US and Canada can manage wildlife conflict.

Ryan Wilkes The Bird in My Backyard

The short documentary The Bird in my Backyard follows Eric throughout the spring of 2024 as he documents two mother hummingbirds raising their chicks. It’s a story about the childlike curiosity in all of us, and the doors it can open if we just lean in a bit closer.

  1. My analog bag has always been called my “toy” bag from the days when I would pack activity bags for my little girl (now 46) and me for the long drives from Iowa to my grandparents’ home in Kansas. Now my toy bag filled with knitting, book, notebook/pens tablet, and kriss kross book goes from my home in North Carolina to our beach place on the ocean, but the idea remains of those long-ago trips.

  2. Unfortunately I couldn’t open the article on Judy Dench. It said it was a copyright issue.
I’m looking forward to watching the new season of Lincoln Lawyer and trying the Corn Dip recipe.
    Hope you feel better!

    1. Phy,
I am so sorry that the YouTube on Judi Dench had a copyright issue. In fact it has completely disappeared. I will try to find it again and send a link.
I hope that you have a wonderful day!

  3. Hello Elizabeth,
Sorry you are feeling poorly,as the English say…a wonderful book you might like I am reading is Niall Williams Time of the Child set in Ireland which is so good. We love to watch the curling and the bobsled but finger skating is our favorite as I so enjoy hearing Tara and Johnny! All the best, get some rest, feel better soon!

  4. Elizabeth! I’m glad Bill’s better, but so sorry you’re coming down with something. Hopefully a weekend of rest and relaxation will do the trick. I enjoyed the opening ceremony too and look forward to the next two weeks of competition. I watch the old fashioned way … the days events packaged during prime time. Is that analog? I think my bag is analog too although I do carry my phone so I guess it’s cheating. I’m also the fan of the ‘dumb’ house. Ha! I can’t wait to get my hands on Murder in Highbury from yesterday’s post. I can read between sporting events. Happy weekend! xo

  5. Elizabeth, Ii hope you are taking care! This season’s flu is nothing to mess with. I am sending you hugs and good thoughts you are well fast.
I have been loving the Olympics so much. Hoping you can chill in bed and watch it all.
The analog bag reminds me of what i used to pack for my boys for trips. I’ve spent some time at the library this week, and it’s a great spot to take such a bag. It’s a third place for many people- and needed for our brains!
Can’t wait to watch all these videos! I will show Max the hummer one. We have a lot of bird feeders and houses in our front and back and lots of hummers.
    Take care, xo

    1. Kim, I think you will LOVE the hummingbird movie. I love hummingbirds and have made it my mission to discover a nest, which will be like finding a needle in a haystack as someone told me they are the size of a walnut. And their eggs are the size of a tic tac!
I think the move to analog is great, so many of this generation are having issues with anxiety, mental illness, societal interaction and the list goes on. Anything that moves people off the phone and scrolling is fine by me.
The library is the perfect place for a rest, one of my favorite places to go to “regroup.”
      Have a wonderful week friend.
      xo
