Friday Favorites No. 657

Good morning friends! Did you have a nice week? I felt like I was playing catchup this week, but then again I always feel like that when I have been away. We had several appointments this week and it was my husbands birthday which is another reason I felt like I was busy all week.

It’s been another hot week here, but this morning I woke to a chill back in the air. Dare I hope that cooler weather is on the way? Fingers crossed because I want to start wearing my sweaters before December.

This morning I have brownies and cookies to make for the church fundraiser. Then I am going to make Nussschnecken for me, they are easy and delicious German walnut snails. I like them so much I have to immediately give some away or I will eat them all.

So far no plans for the weekend except watching football,  making chili and trying a few new holiday recipes. What about you? What are your plans?

I have lots to share so let’s get to it!

FOOD

I love curry, especially if they are easy to make. This chicken curry korma recipe is cooked in one pan with no marinating required and it’s ready in less than 30 minutes! It doesn’t get any better than that.

The Second Change Cinema

At the end of a fog-covered alley, glitters a glamorous cinema. It’s nearly impossible to find. When Ellie and her fiancé, Drake, stumble upon it during a late-night walk, they’re shocked to discover what’s playing inside the red-velvet auditorium: their formative memories.

Drake fears what the cinema might reveal, but eventually gives in when Ellie insists they return for more viewings. She’s haunted by a night from her past that she doesn’t fully remember. This is her opportunity to piece the story back together. But as the memories displayed on screen inch closer to the present, they realize they’re both keeping secrets from each other.

With their wedding on the horizon, Ellie and Drake must decide if seeing their pasts changes their plans for a future together. Filled with warmth, hope, and a dash of magic, The Second Chance Cinema is both an enchanting escape and a thought-provoking examination of how our memories shape who we are.

The White Octopus Hotel book cover.

The White Octopus Hotel

London, 2015. When reclusive art appraiser Eve Shaw shakes the hand of a silver-haired gentleman in her office, the warmth of his palm sends a spark through her.

His name is Max Everly—curiously, the same name as Eve’s favorite composer, born one hundred sixteen years prior. And she has the sudden feeling that she’s held his hand before . . . but where, and when?

The White Octopus Hotel, 1935. In this belle époque building high in the snowy mountains, Eve and a young Max wander the winding halls, lost in time.

Each of them has been through the trenches—Eve through a family accident and Max on the battlefields of the Great War—but for an impossible moment, love and healing are just a room away . . . if only they have the courage to step through the door.

Around the Table book cover.

Around The Table: 52 Essays On Food & Life

For Diana Henry’s many fans, her evocative writing about both place and food brings just as much pleasure as her delicious recipes. Around the Table is a selection of some of Diana’s very best essays, handpicked from over two decades of her much-loved cookbooks.

From the bustling Turkish groceries of the Edgware Road to the kitchen table of a cottage in rural France, a trattoria tucked away in the suburbs of Rome to the chilly Vermont countryside famed for its maple syrup, Diana Henry has followed her tastebuds around the world.

In this collection, Diana’s writing brings ingredients to life on the page. Tuck into salty and sweet, buttery and inky purple and black olives. Blood-red threads of saffron that turn whole platters of food into gold, bleeding yolk-yellow streaks over creamy chicken and milky white yogurt. Mouth-puckeringly citrusy, easy to peel and almost seedless Valencia oranges. The simple pleasure of a warming slice of toast.

This vivid and nourishing collection of essays on the joys of good food is an utter delight for the senses.
