What is Banoffee Pie?

Banoffee pie is a classic English dessert combining bananas and toffee. Typically it is made as a whole pie, but can also be made into individual and portable banoffee pie in a jar. Perfect for picnics, bbq’s and outdoor summer fun. This delicious dessert combines a buttery crust, topped with sliced bananas, caramel and copious amounts of fluffy, fresh whipped cream. It is one of my all time favorite desserts and I think it will become one of yours as well.

What you need to make Banoffee Pie in a Jar

Banoffee pie is easy to make and comes together in just minutes using a few pantry and refrigerator staples. The best part is that for these little jars the recipe is no-bake!

Ingredients for Banoffee

  • 11/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk(COOKED) directions below or store bought dulce de leche
  • 2 bananas sliced
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1-2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Directions

  • If you are making your own caramel with a can of sweetened condensed milk there are several methods to cook the caramel, I use this one. If you are afraid to boil a closed can you can use one of these methods.  You can also make it in a crock pot, using this method. Or you can purchase dulce de leche.
  • Melt the butter and then combine it in a bowl with the graham cracker crumbs, mix well. Divide the crumb mixture into 6 jars or cups, press down lightly.
  • Evenly distribute the COOKED sweetened condensed Milk or dulce de leche caramel between the jars, then top with the sliced bananas.
  • Whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar to stiff peaks and then top each jar with whipped cream. Sprinkle with graham cracker crumbs. Place in refrigerator to chill for at least an hour.

Notes & Variations

  • This dessert is best eaten the day it is made or the next day. I do not recommend freezing banoffee pie.
  • You can buy dulce de leche at the store, or make your own which is what I do. There are several methods to make your own, I use this one, if you are afraid to boil a closed can you can use one of these methods. Or you can purchase your own dulce de leche.
  • If you are making a whole pie simply purchase a graham cracker crust or make your own and layer with the bananas, caramel and whipped cream.
  • If you want to bake the graham cracker crumb layer to make these jars simply press it into a pan and bake for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown and fragrant. Then cool and break into pieces to use in the jars. OR used a purchased graham crust
  • Add a layer or chocolate or chocolate shavings to the jars or pie.
  • Use your favorite biscuits or cookies to make the crust.

  1. I have made a similar dessert for years with sweetened condensed milk that is cooked until it is dark; however, my recipe calls for doing it in the oven in a pan of water. For those who are nervous about boiling it on the stove top, that is an option.

  2. WOW. looks so easy to serve in the individual cups. When you say evenly distribute the caramel do you mean the sweetened condensed milk?

    1. Hello Mary Ann,
The sweetened condensed milk MUST BE COOKED to make caramel. It is not hard to make but does take a little time to cook it. Otherwise you can use store bought dulce de leche. Personally I recommend making your own, it can also be made in a crock pot.
But yes, I mean once the sweetened condensed milk is cooked and made into “caramel” evenly distribute it among the glasses.

  3. I’ve never heard of this (no surprise there) but I love toffee. I’ve become very interested in food like this, jar salads, etc. It’s such an easier way to prepare and store food.

  4. Is coffee used in this recipe? If so, how much, and instant, or brewed? Thank you.
I’ve also used the condensed milk as well in recipes.

  5. Sounds delicious! I have made the condensed milk (wish I had seen your tip about the glue sooner!) Fun post with great ideas from all of you ladies.
