Monday Musings No.76

A look at Lee Radziwiłł’s  former homes, The Disenchantment by Celia Bell, summer shopping and more on Monday Musings.

MONDAY MUSINGS

Good morning friends, how was your weekend? Were you able to enjoy some beautiful summer weather or was it rainy and stormy? Smokey and cloudy?

It was beautiful here, Saturday we walked to the village and then to the club to swim. We spent time in the yard picking up pinecones, weeding beds and cleaning out the fountain.

Sadly there were a few casualties this weekend. Sunday I woke up to find the dear had feasted on my only tomato(it was the size of a tangerine), all of the sweet potatoes, the leaves of the white potatoes and all of my geraniums.

I have been carefully tending and babying my only tomato plant, and potatoes and nursed back to health 6 containers of geraniums that suffered from a late frost. To say I am a little down is an understatement. The thrillers, spillers and all the rest are little stubs in the dirt. I don’t know if they will come back before the summer is over.

The good news is they left my poisonous foxgloves alone and can still enjoy them as I look out the windows. The wildflower meadow is starting to show a little color, mostly pinks, purple and white which compliment the cat mint perfectly.

Are you having better luck in your garden? What are you growing? Flowers, fruit or vegetables?

Enough about me, onto +5 Things.

The Disenchantment by Celia Bell.

The Disenchantment by Celia Bell

In 17th century Paris, everyone has something to hide. The noblemen and women and writers consort with fortune tellers in the confines of their homes, servants practice witchcraft and black magic, and the titled poison family members to obtain inheritance. But for the Baroness Marie Catherine, the only thing she wishes to hide is how unhappy she is in her marriage, and the pleasures she seeks outside of it.

When her husband is present, the Baroness spends her days tending to her children and telling them elaborate fairy tales, but when he’s gone, Marie Catherine indulges in a more liberated existence, one of forward-thinking discussions with female scholars in the salons of grand houses, and at the center of her freedom: Victoire Rose de Bourbon, Mademoiselle de Conti, the androgynous, self-assured countess who steals Marie Catherine’s heart and becomes her lover.

Victoire possesses everything Marie Catherine does not—confidence in her love, and a brazen fearlessness in all that she’s willing to do for it. But when a shocking and unexpected murder occurs, Marie Catherine must escape. And what she discovers is the dark underbelly of a city full of people who have secrets they would kill to keep.

  1. So sad about your garden. Deer hate the smell of herbs. If you scatter herbs plants around your vegetable or flower garden the deer are less likely to eat it. Blessings to you.

    1. Thank you for the tip Renae. I think this must have been a very hungry deer because I had a lot of mint mixed in with the geraniums and they ate that and the glowers. Have a wonderful day!
