Stylish, practical, utilitarian barn coats with updated heritage designs to add to your Fall and Winter wardrobe.
Barn Coats
Barn coats or chore coats are making a statement this Fall. According to social media they are the “it coat” for Fall and Winter. These utilitarian and practical coats have left their humble beginnings on farms and recently landed on the runways of Paris, Milan and NY. Now they are everywhere.
I purchased my first barn coat in 2001, a wax Barbour jacket to cut the biting wind and rain while on a 3 week walking trip in the UK. The year before while on a trip to Scotland I was ill prepared for the cold and was directed to the nearest Barbour store by one of the locals. They instructed me to get a pair of wellie boots and a wax jacket.
All these years later I still wear my original Barbour jacket and Le Chemeau boots in the Fall and Winter, they are warm and comfortable. Since then I have purchased a couple more Barbour coats and alternate between them in the Fall and Winter.

7 BEST BARN COATS
A classic barn coat is a wardrobe staple, it’s the perfect jacket for chilly days and outdoor adventures. Most have a relaxed fit that allow you to layer a shirt and a sweater underneath to stay extra warm. Some have plaid lining or flannel lining, front pockets and are waxed to keep water out. Others are more minimal.
If you want to add a barn coat or jacket to your fall wardrobe here are 7 you might like. If none of these are to your taste check out the collage below for my styles and colors.

Barbour is a longtime favorite of Kate Middleton, Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth for good reason, they are a British heritage brand. Not only that they bring a bit of countryside fashion and warmth to your wardrobe.

Everlane Barn jacket, with a corduroy collar, button-front closure, and two front pockets in durable organic cotton canvas.

This Boden barn jacket with plaid details is my favorite of the season. I love anything, well, most anything that’s plaid.

This season the barn jacket trend includes all sorts of styles including vintage style, a denim barn jacket, workwear jacket, and classic style to name just a few.
There is barn jacket to suit all tastes and budgets, some like the Alex Mills and Barbour jackets are more expensive. But they are made with high quality materials and their craftsmanship has stood the test of time. Case in point, my oldest Barbour is over 20 years old and still looks and wears great. Boden, The Gap and JCrew are less expensive and well made.

On My Radar~Barn Jackets and Coats

Barn coats. A staple in my wardrobe for years. I actually wore mine during fall and winter to the barn to muck stalls and feed my 5 horses. That was 25 years ago. Mine was burgundy (to hide stains and whatever) and was very warm . No belt. Hit me midway between knee and hip. Still have it. I don’t wear it. It just reminds me of my horses. Thanks for sharing .
I love barn coats, especially Barbour as I mentioned.
I would love to know more about your horses, did you compete or were the horses just for you to enjoy?
Have a wonderful day Marcia.
I’m new to this site and found this issue’s lifestyle and fashion recommendations helpful. As a new subscriber, I’m using the photo of you to get a sense of the person behind the blog. I’ve gotta say that the photo makes you look angry and off putting. It’s hard to feel welcome, and to get past it to scroll down and read the content when one is being glared at by the gatekeeper photo …
Hello Cindy, welcome to the blog.
I am sorry that you found the photo offensive, I am not a fan of selfies or photos what can I say. Hopefully you can see your way past the photo and enjoy the content.
Have a great day!
Cindy,
Do you always leave unkind comments on people’s photos?
Maybe you should read more of Elizabeth’s posts and get to know her blog before calling her profile pic that of an ‘angry’ person. Think about how your words make the woman who crafted this beautiful and uplifting blog feel before you offer unsolicited advice? She is the opposite of all you just stated, but as a ‘new’ person you wouldn’t know that. You sure rushed to give her an insult though didn’t you? Have the day you deserve.
