Good morning! It is hot and humid here but that is not stopping me from dreaming of cooler crisp days. The ones where you walk outside and you can smell an early morning fire wafting in the air and the damp, chilly air caresses your face. The mornings that you don’t need a winter coat but a jacket or a trench coat would be perfect. Especially if you were walking through town in search of a cup of coffee or on an early morning stroll on holiday in Paris or London.

Trench Coats~ A Classic and Timeless Wardrobe Staple

Barn coats and trench coats are everywhere this year. They say they are the “it” coats of the year. Truth be told, they are the “it” coats every year but don’t tell anyone that I told you as I am not a fashion blogger.

Trench coats are a closet staple for many and if you do not have one this might be the year to consider adding one to your wardrobe.

Last week, I wrote about my love for barn coats and today I am turning my eye to trench coats. I love the classic look of a trench coat. It’s incredibly versatile piece for your wardrobe that you can wear anytime, casual and business, cool days, rainy days and even on a winter day if you live where the temps are mild. They are great for traveling and for everyday.

History of the Trench Coat

Trench coats have roots back to the early 20th century, they have evolved from military gear to everyday and runway staples. The trench coat was originally designed for British Army officers during World War I, combining durability, protection from the weather and mobility. Though British in origin, trench coats quickly gained popularity worldwide, they are classic, versatile and stylish.

Trench coats are available in a variety of styles and cuts, from classic full length, to cropped, single breasted or double breasted, fitted or oversized. There is a trench coat for everyone and every body type.

Burberry

The Burberry trench is iconic and classic, and definitely an investment piece for your wardrobe. Thomas Burberry patented the gabardine fabric in 1879, it is a tightly woven, water resistant textile that revolutionized trench coat materials. If you are thinking of purchasing a Burberry trench they are available in several lengths and you are sure to find one to suit your style. I personally love the longer version, it’s more versatile, you can wear it with pants, a dress, or skirt.

Burberry jackets and trench coats are sold at most of your favorite retailers like Nordstrom, and Saks 5th Avenue. If you have always wanted to add a Burberry trench to your capsule wardrobe but don’t like the price tag think about purchasing one second hand. Ebay, The Real Real or your local consignment shop.

The great thing is that you do not have to spend a lot to get this classic look, everyone of your favorite stores has them from J. Crew, Anthropologie, Talbots, Quince,  Brooks Brothers and more.

That said, a well made more expensive coat will last you a long time time, and a less expensive version may only last a season or two. Always buy what works for your lifestyle, and budget.

Are trench coats good for Fall?

What is the Season of Trench Coats?

The best season for a trench coat is any season that you wear it and don’t leave it languishing in your closet. Trench coats are practical and versatile and are perfect for Fall, Winter and Spring.

Do trench coats ever go out of style?

No, just like a white shirt, black loafers and a good handbag a neutral trench coat will never go out of style.

  1. I have a beautiful trench coar I bought three years ago in Florida. I always had one thruout my life, so I'm glad this piece is back, although it's a clasic.

  2. Elizabeth, I was so excited when I saw this post, as I love trenches! You found some really great ones.. I was surprised to see you linked to my post. Thank you for that!
I hope you find a good one for your trip. Last year I bought two of the same trench – tan and navy from J Crew Factory and took it to the UK. I used to have a Burberry and lost it if you can believe it. I saved for that and it was their gabardine, which wears like iron. I later bought another on sale in the taffeta and it isn’t the same.
    Someday, I will get another.
Great post and I will share it on the weekend! xo

    1. Thank you Kim! Of course I linked to you, you style everything so beautifully.
I hate loosing things, especially a piece you saved and loved. I had the most beautiful Mont Blanc pen that I had for over 15 years and used every day, went on a trip and it did not come home with me. Sadly my husbands was “lost” on the same trip.
Thank you for sharing, I always appreciate it.
      See you tomorrow.
