Weekend Meanderings

Good Saturday morning friends. It’s time for Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet. Join us as we share all of the things that piqued our interests and caught our eye this week.

I don’t know about you but whenever we have guests, or we travel I am exhausted when we return home or when everyone leaves. It could be because I am having a lot of fun, or that my schedule is off, or perhaps a combination of both. Do you ever feel like that?

Thankfully it rained yesterday and I was able to catch up on a few things and get to bed a little earlier. I am feeling much better today. Speaking of rain, if my weather app is to be believed we will have rain for the next 7 days, hopefully we won’t float away.

I had plans this weekend to plant more  bulbs as I still have about 75 left, but I will have to wait until next week. The good news is that little shoots are coming up from the ground where I planted the last batch. To say I am excited would be an understatement. I had feared the deer or squirrels were going to eat them.

Lately 3 deer have been spending a lot of time eating the buds and berries off the shrubs in the back yard, checking in to see if they have any Zinas left in the flower patch I planted. Then they head around the front to eat all of the fresh Zinas in the front wildflower field I planted. Which by the way is starting to show some color. For weeks all that has been blooming is white and purple flowers, now there are little orange and yellow flowers.

How are your gardens growing? Share your flower and vegetable successes!

Sunday is Father’s Day, will you be doing anything special with your dad? My dad is in the Midwest so I will not be seeing him this weekend unfortunately. Luckily one or two of myself sisters will be with him. If you still need a Father’s Day gift I shared some of Bills’ favorite things in this post.

One to Follow~Pantry Hill

High school sweethearts Darien and Eric moved back to Saratoga Springs, NY after several years away. They felt pulled by the 250 year old family history and wanted to raise their three boys closer to family. Pantry Hill is where they share their recipes, garden, home and so much more. It is a charming space with an old world, cozy feel that I think you will love.

Weekly Garden Tour

Gardening is not my forte but I so enjoy learning from people who are willing to share their knowledge and beautiful gardens. This one is a particular favorite, I love all of the layers of plantings.

Floret Flower Farm~Floret’s Preserving Heritage Roses

Erin and Chris Benzakein have spent the past 18 years building their family run flower farm and seed company Floret from the ground up in Washington State. Their tiny backyard garden grew into a 2 acre garden and has since expanded into one of the most well know flower farms in the world.

In addition the flowers and seeds Erin and Chris have written 3 books, and numerous online courses(Chris is the photographer and cinematographer). They have filmed a series about the farm for the Magnolia network and now are hoping to grow and save heritage roses.

If you love flowers and want to learn more you can find a wealth of information on their website and blog and more importantly in the free flower library.

Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything

https://youtu.be/4u8UCNCDszM?si=o4QGudGlhPzKvnV1

Barbara Walters was an icon. She was a journalist, and television personality from 1951 – 2016 on programs including the Today show, the ABC Evening News, 20/20 and The View. She was a cohost on Today and in fact was the first woman to hold that position then she became the first female co-host of the ABC Evening news alongside Harry Reasoner.

But it was her interviews with politicians and celebrities that people remember most. Do you remember her interview with the Kardashians when she told them they had no talent and she wondered why they were so famous?

Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything premiered at the Tribeca film festival and is coming to Hulu on June 23th. The documentary features Katie Couric, Oprah Winfrey and many others and explores her groundbreaking career as well as her husbands’, daughter and lots more.

I remember Barbara Walters on 20/20, her interviews and The View and am looking forward to watching this documentary and learning more about her.

  1. I’m a big gardener and try to always be organic so I can support pollinators which have rapidly decreased here. I do think a lot of that is caused by the mosquito spraying companies people use because it kills all insects not just mosquitoes…so that includes butterfly caterpillars and bees etc. Makes me sad. If you have deer or rabbits eating your plants you can spray Liquid Fence around the perimeter of a bed. That helps.
We had over 21” of rain through April and May and June. We broke all kinds of records and it was too much. So our gardens are way behind this year. I’ve had terrible luck with getting my zinnia seeds to sprout.
My dad passed away at 99 in 2020. But our 3 cats bought their cat dad a present this year! 🙂
I look forward to watching the videos you shared. Have a lovely weekend.

  2. Hey E! I actually have to cage anything that I don’t want the deer to eat. The large bushes all have a deer line, about 3 feet up. Nothing really works – we have a herd of 9 – 11, with fawns every year.
Love me some Floret. Have all her books and watch all her videos. I would love to visit some day.

  3. Good morning! Those naughty deer eating your colorful flowers! Between them and the rabbits it’s a constant battle. At my aquatic classes, so many people have the same issue. Lots of good links today. Enjoyed the one on hearing aids, as I need to look into them soon. Don’t know why I’ve been procrastinating. And love the couple in Michigan doing so much for their community. Such generous hearts. Can’t wait to see the Barbara Walters documentary. Rest up from your busy week and take care.

  4. Elizabeth, I didn’t know about and can’t wait to watch the Barbara Walters documentary. I really miss her form of journalism, and her later in career celebrity interviews. I have complete sympathy for your gardening woes. I’ve come to believe a successful gardener is one that lets set backs go and just keeps moving forward. It’s the only way. That and fencing … which may stop the deer, but there are so many other critters to contend with. Bulbs are one of the greatest pleasures of gardening. Tons of effort and tons of pleasure as well. Hopefully for you and not the squirrels. Wink wink. As for recovery from travel and house guests, it’s takes me days to fully bounce back. Days of quiet and solitude. You’re not alone. Have the best weekend! xo

  5. Elizabeth, I totally get how you feel after guests leave! It’s a lot. Hope you had a great time with your mom. It must be hard to be away from your dad.
Hope your gardening is successful. It’s so great when the bulbs come up!
I love your cute French outfit and look forward to your videos.
Hope you have a lovely weekend. xo

  6. Hi Elizabeth,
I just listened to the Floret Flower Farm Roses, wow what a gigantic undertaking. I so enjoyed it.
Barbara Walters was always one of my very favorites. She was always direct and asked excellent questions. I was like to see women in positions of authority.
Yes, when company leaves it’s a re grouping period and can leave you being very sleepy. Lots of preparation before they come, then all the stuff to do afterwards. I’m with you.
So so sorry about your deer eating up some of your flowers. They go after the good stuff too. How dare them.

    1. Katherine, I found the Floret Flower farm documentary fascinating as well. Can you imagine taking over the life work of someone else? I also find the evolution of the flower farm quite amazing, from a small garden to supplying seeds and flowers around the world. The flower library is a wealth of knowledge.
Barbara Walters was a very interesting woman, she was one of my favorites too!
      Have a wonderful week!
