Good morning! I hope that your week went well. Things here are great, the bathroom is finished except for painting and accessories( the hurricane set us back a few days) which is a good thing because my mother-in-law arrives next week so it is in the nick of time. This weekend I will be preparing the house, baking and getting ready for 3 weeks of guests including my mother-in-law, sister-in-law who arrives a week later and then my parents the week after that.

I hope that you enjoy my finds this week.

Books

Rouge by Richard Kirshenbaum

This fast-paced novel examines the lives, loves, and sacrifices of the visionaries who invented the modern cosmetics industry: Josiah Herzenstein, born in a Polish Jewish Shtlel, the entrepreneur who transforms herself into a global style icon and the richest woman in the world, Josephine Herz; Constance Gardiner, her rival, the ultimate society woman who invents the door-to-door business and its female workforce but whose deepest secret threatens everything; CeeCee Lopez, the bi-racial beauty and founder of the first African American woman’s hair relaxer business, who overcomes prejudice and heartbreak to become her community’s first female millionaire. The cast of characters is rounded out by Mickey Heron, a dashing, sexy ladies’ man whose cosmetics business is founded in a Hollywood brothel. All are bound in a struggle to be number one, doing anything to get there…including murder.

The Only Woman in the Room

She possessed a stunning beauty. She also possessed a stunning mind. Could the world handle both?

Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich’s plans while at her husband’s side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

But she kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis…if anyone would listen to her.

A powerful novel based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist whose groundbreaking invention revolutionized modern communication, The Only Woman in the Room is a masterpiece.

The Stationary Shop

Roya is a dreamy, idealistic teenager living in 1953 Tehran who, amidst the political upheaval of the time, finds a literary oasis in kindly Mr. Fakhri’s neighborhood book and stationery shop. She always feels safe in his dusty store, overflowing with fountain pens, shiny ink bottles, and thick pads of soft writing paper.

When Mr. Fakhri, with a keen instinct for a budding romance, introduces Roya to his other favorite customer—handsome Bahman, who has a burning passion for justice and a love for Rumi’s poetry—she loses her heart at once. And, as their romance blossoms, the modest little stationery shop remains their favorite place in all of Tehran.

A few short months later, on the eve of their marriage, Roya agrees to meet Bahman at the town square, but suddenly, violence erupts—a result of the coup d’etat that forever changes their country’s future. In the chaos, Bahman never shows. For weeks, Roya tries desperately to contact him, but her efforts are fruitless. With a sorrowful heart, she resigns herself to never seeing him again.

Until, more than sixty years later, an accident of fate leads her back to Bahman and offers her a chance to ask him the questions that have haunted her for more than half a century: Why did he leave? Where did he go? How was he able to forget her?

The Stationery Shop is a beautiful and timely exploration of devastating loss, unbreakable family bonds, and the overwhelming power of love.

  1. Lots speaks to me here Elizabeth –
The sandwich from Half Baked Harvest (love her recipes!).
The novel 'The Only Woman in the Room' I must find and read!
The first dress at H&M I actually looked at just yesterday when at the mall – actually Bob pointed it out to me! It's really lovely but I didn't have time to try on – maybe I'll head back there today! H&M.
I must say that H&M have some really nice things for fall – sweaters, blouses, even coats (one of which I've purchased for travel and must share in a post). Also, despite being a long time ZARA lover/purchaser I now think H&M garments are better in workmanship – just my IMO!

Enjoy the weekend – hopefully cooling off a bit!

    1. I hope that you let us know if you get the dress. I am going to order one for myself. Have a great weekend MAry.
