Ham, gruyere cheese and pickled apple tartine, an easy open faced sandwich for lunch or dinner.

Ham, Gruyere and Pickled Apple Tartine
Good morning friends, today I am joining my friend Annie of Most Lovely Things for her weekly series, Tartine Tuesdays. I am sharing an easy, fall inspired ham, gruyere cheese and homemade pickled apple tartine. The pickled apples add a bit of tartness and Fall spice to the sweet ham and creamy cheese. It is one of my favorite sandwiches and can be made toasted, as I made it, or un-toasted if you prefer.
Pickled apples are a great addition to your refrigerator, as are pickled cranberries over the coming months. Both can be used on sandwiches, charcuterie boards, served with cheese or even as gifts for the holidays. Fork in the Road has a great recipe, that I use but I add cloves along with the cinnamon and anise.

What is a Tartine?
A tartine is a a French term to describe an “open-faced”sandwich. It can be as simple as a slice of bread with butter and your favorite Bonne Maman jam or all sorts of toppings layered on without the top piece of bread. It can be sweet or savory.
Think of avocado toast is a tartine, egg salad piled high on crusty bread or salmon and cream cheese. The possibilities are endless and are limited only by your imagination and taste buds.
What’s the Difference Between a Tartine and a Sandwich?
Plain and simple, a tartine is a sandwich with one slice of bread. In other countries they are are also referred to as toast, bruschetta, crostini, smørrebrød(Denmark), and matpakke(Norway) to name just a few of these delectable open-faced sandwich type creations.
Whatever name you call them by, they are an easy to make meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner and can be eaten at home or on the go.

- Sprinkle the mustard side of the bread with a little shredded cheese, then add 2 slices of ham, 3 slices of pickled apple and 2 slices of gruyere cheese to each slice of bread. Sprinkle a little more of the grated Swiss cheese over the top of the tartine.
- Bake until cheese is melted and golden around edges, 6-8 minutes.

As you can see, making a nutritious and delicious tartine is not hard at all. You can customize this tartine to suit your taste or to use whatever you have in your refrigerator. Make and use your own no-knead bread, add vegetables and herbs from your garden or cheese and meats from your travels or even your homemade chutney.
