WEEKEND MEANDERINGS

Good morning friends, happy Saturday! It’s time for weekend meandering with Kim and Juliet, our weekly series where we share all of the things that piqued our interest and caught our eye over the past week.

Today I am sharing little of this and a little of that including a feel good story, interesting did bits about Wimbledon, strawberries and cream, white dresses and lots more.

Grab a coffee, tea or chocolate and let’s get to it.

Wimbledon

Wimbledon started this week and I will admit although I am a terrible tennis player and have not played in years I still enjoy watching these amazing athletes from around the world compete. Not to mention the people watching, the Royal Box and the athleticism of the ball boys and girls. I can’t believe how hard they work!

More about Wimbledon

  • It is the oldest tennis championship in the world
  • This year it will be played  from July 3- 16, you can find more information here.
  • Wimbledon is one of the four major Grand Slam tournaments in tennis, the US Open, Australian Open and French Open are the other three.
  • It is the only one of the Grand Slam tournaments played on natural grass.
  • Over 50,000 balls are used during the championship
  • This year women will be allowed to wear colored undershorts for the first time in the history of the game. The change comes after the players complained of the stress of having to wear white while on their periods.
  • Martina Navratilova has won the most titles, she won 9 times
  • Rufus the Harris Hawk Strats work each morning to scare the pigeons away from the courts. He has been working at Wimbledon for over 15 years. You can follow him on Instagram

If your dream is to attend Wimbledon, the ballot for 2024 tickets is due to open in September 2023 and you need to apply using the myWIMBLEDON system by November.

Read more about the ball boys and girls. It is fascinating to read how they train.

Strawberries and Cream~Wimbledon

Wimbledon desserts, Fresh strawberries and cream in a bowl.

Strawberries and Cream

According to the Wimbledon website 1.92 million strawberries are picked and consumed during the two weeks of the tournament. The strawberries are all pick fresh the morning they are served from one farm in Kent, Hugh Lowe Farms. The farm has been suppling the tournament for 25 years.

The cost for this delectable treat is £2.50. If you are not going to be there in person you can make some at home. It could not be easier, it is 2 ingredients, fresh picked strawberries and cream. Wash and hull the berries then place in a bowl. Pour heavy whipping cream over the top and sprinkle with a little sugar.

If I were making this for myself, I would lightly whip the cream, not to soft peaks but just so there is a little volume.

If strawberries and cream are not your thing you could  try a Pimm’s Cup cocktail! 300,000 cocktails are served every year to Wimbledon spectators.

Instructions for a Pimm’s Cup:

In a glass with ice, mix 2 ounces of Pimm’s and 4 ounces of ginger ale. Garnish with a cucumber slice.

White Dresses

White isn’t just for the court. I found a few white dresses that will keep you cool and beautiful all summer long.

Do you love a good  “feel good” story? Me too! The current one making the rounds is about Shawn M Warner who became an Amazon best selling author overnight after a stranger posted a video of his book signing on TikTok.

TikTok user Jerrad Swearenjin (@internetfamouslol), walked into a store where Warner was at a book signing. There was no one in line and the author was sitting at the table looking a little forlorn next to his pile of books.

Swearenjin walked up to the table asked about the book and if he could make a video and purchase one to give to one of his followers. He uploaded the video and it has now received more than 17 million views catapulting Shawn Warmer to the top of the Amazon YA Best Seller list.

  1. I enjoy your posts, but the pop up ads are just annoying. I don’t mind an embedded ad, but I can never get rid of the pop ups that block content. If they continue, I’ll stop following.

    1. Leila,
I apologize for the ads. My ad network is working to fix the issue. I am happy you enjoy the blog and hope that you do not unfollow.
      Have a wonderful day.

  2. Good morning, Elizabeth, from Mercer Island, WA,

Your blog features so many interesting and inspiring articles. Saturday mornings are delightful with you.

I was once a fair tennis player and never miss a Wimbledon! Your facts drew me into the tournament in new ways.

The story of the lobster compound in Maine is utterly charming. Their opening and closing of the summer kitchen capsulizes their lifestyle change as they preserve the essence of the amazing historical property.

Enjoy the top 16 at Wimbledon this morning,
    Diney

    1. Diane,

THANK YOU for your kind comment. Blogging is hard work and it is a challenge to come up with new posts. I personally love to learn new things and to share them on the blog. It is nice to know that you are enjoying them too.

I loved learning all of these new to me things about Wimbledon, the history, the hawk and all the rest. Why did you stop playing tennis if I may ask? Hopefully not an injury.

Have a wonderful day, I hope that you enjoy Wimbledon as well.

  3. Strawberries and cream, Pimm’s Cup and Wimbledon … so fabulous and my ideal weekend. I’m really enjoying Wimbledon this year, especially after watching Netflix Break Point and getting up to speed with all the up and coming younger players. It would be a dream to be there on Center Court for a final. I appreciate the how to get tickets information. Some day! Summer + white dresses = perfection! Love all the options you’ve chosen. I’ve got a post coming on white dresses later this week. We’re still waiting on summer weather, but no complaints as its better to be too cool than too warm. Hope you have the best weekend Elizabeth. Hard to believe it’a already mid-July?! xo

  4. Elizabeth I really enjoyed all your Wimbledon info! Fun to know about the history and the hawk and all that goes into the strawberries and all that. I also wrote about the view change I think the black pants make sense. I just love watching all of it and hate when it’s over. I’m
A huge fan Of Pimm’s Cups!
Your selection of white dresses is lovely too!
I hope you have a beautiful weekend! xo

  5. Hi Elizabeth! My husband played tennis for the University of Louisville and is a huge fan. He has been watching but I don’t understand tennis at all. lol! I would love to have one of those strawberry and cream desserts though! Have a good day!

    1. Donna, that is great! Does he still play? I do not understand the game either! But I do watch and enjoy it, as I said I am fascinated by how hard the ball girl/boys train and work each game.
      Have a wonderful day!

  6. I so enjoyed reading your post, Elizabeth! I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I was lucky enough to attend Wimbledon a few times and it is so much fun. I confess, I often spent more time watching the Royal Box than the tennis! Thank you for sharing all these interesting links as well. I find so much inspiration at Weekend Meanderings! PS – I was just reading the comments. Please don’t apologise for the ads, people have to realise that it costs money to own and maintain a blog, and that we should be able to (at the very least!) recoup that.

    1. Thank you April! I have never been to Wimbledon but I think I would be doing the same, watching the Royal Box. I think I read this week that the Queen was not a tennis fan and did not attend often. Somehow I can see that would not be her sport.
Have a wonderful week. Stay cool.
