Monday Musings No. 211 | Daylight Saving, a Knee and a Few Good Things

The clocks sprang ahead, my knee had other plans and I have been on the sofa with a gel pack and a very good book. Come sit with me.

Monday Musings — cup of hot chocolate on kitchen table on a slow Monday morning.

Yesterday was my least favourite day of the year. The clocks sprang ahead an hour and just like that, daylight saving is back. I am a winter girl at heart — I count the days until the clocks fall back in November. I love the dark, the quiet, the cold. I love that winter keeps most of the crawly things at bay. Hibernating is a lifestyle for me.

And then Sunday night added insult to injury. I went to bed perfectly fine and woke at some point to a terrible pain on the inside of my knee. My first thought was to get up and stretch it. That was a mistake. The pain was so sharp I nearly fell over. I shuffled to the kitchen for a gel pack and two Aleve and made my way back to bed wondering what I had done. Did I have a wrestling match in my dreams? My mother-in-law used to say that aging is hard — things just break. I am beginning to understand exactly what she meant. After resting it for most of the day it is feeling a little better, but I still can’t figure out what happened.

On a more interesting note — have you watched Love Story, the documentary about John Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette? I have not. I watched that relationship unfold in real time in the nineties and it was — romantic, loving, complicated, and clearly under enormous pressure. What bothers me is this: every anniversary, with fewer and fewer people left who actually knew them, the rumors get worse. Every year she is trashed a little more and he remains the golden boy. There is such a thing as letting the dead rest in peace. I just wish we were better at it instead of trying to make a buck off of every tragedy.

Something more cheerful — are you following Hannah Adkins on YouTube? I have shared her content before and love her. This week she is house hunting in Rye. Grab a coffee, tea or chocolate and enjoy twenty minutes at the beach.

I did finish my latest read. At the Corner of King Street is the story of Addie Morgan, who returns home to care for her newborn niece and finds herself working in her aunt’s architectural salvage shop in Alexandria, Virginia. Old doors, ironwork, forgotten objects — and then mysterious colonial artefacts that start to surface. It is about the history hidden inside old houses and the family secrets that surface alongside it. It’s exactly the kind of book I love.

Are you dreaming of a European adventure? My friend Debra of Scentimental Gardens is leading two trips — one to Paris and one to London and the Cotswolds, including the Chelsea Flower Show. Small groups of twelve like-minded women, organised by two friends who have been doing this for thirty-one years. If either trip sounds like something you would love, leave me a comment or send me a message and I will share the itineraries.

A little shopping news — I have a dress in my cart from one of my favorite designers but I cannot decide between the two color ways. If you were ever a fan of the Tiffany Atlas ring and missed it, I also found a ring very similar at a much better price. And I ordered a few solitary bee boxes and insect hotels this week — ninety percent of bees do not live in hives and my solitary bees deserve a proper home. I may need to add a few bat boxes too. Last but not least I am eyeing a set of green and blue spring and summer plates that I love, though I am debating whether to go salad plates rather than dinner plates as I usually do.

How was your weekend? Have you adjusted to the time change? Tell me in the comments — I always love hearing from you.

  1. I absolutely love the Hannah Adkins vlog. This week’s visit to Rye is one of my favorites. For some reason, I am having difficulty this year with the time change; the feral cats are confused why I am not out the door with their food at the usual 6:45 a.m. (too dark to navigate the steps to the backyard).

  2. Elizabeth, I completely agree with you about DST! I want the time to be left alone for our health and sanity. We are messing with evolution when we play with the clock. Being an introvert I understand your love of fall and winter. Cozy time has my heart as well. Oh! I too follow Hannah. She is so much fun to watch. Let us know how your knee is doing. So sorry!

  3. I had my knee replaced when I was only 57 due to an injury I had in my twenties. It was the best thing I ever did, but suffered with knee pain for years so I truly do “feel your pain.” Hope it heals quickly. I love summer, but wish we just kept to one time. The change has been proven to be costly and unhealthy, but just another item no one can agree on and get it done.

  4. I can’t stand when the hour changes,we should follow the sun hours not some invented ones.
I am a Autumn and Winter person, I can endure the beginning of the Spring but the middle and end and above all, Summer, that I can’t stand, it makes me depressed and it always did since my teen years. When it ends I always thinbk: thanks God, now we rest.

    1. Paula, I am exactly the same. People find that odd but the incessant heat and humidity makes me exhausted and depressed. Autumn and winter are magic and I soak up every minute. The time changes does not make sense, I agree it should follow the sun.

Have a wonderful week and thank you for sharing.

  5. Hi Elizabeth, thank you for the great post – they are always so interesting! I agree with you on the new movie on John & Carolyn – I remember the tragic event clearly – it’s easy to sensationalize to make money off someone who isn’t here any more.
I am interested in the group you mentioned that is taking garden tours and I’d love to learn more.

    1. Alexandra,
I read recently that Daryl Hannah, former girlfriend of JFK said the very same, and that the movie in no way resembled her relationship in any way. It’s so sad. The other thing I find puzzling, is the fascination of the younger generation with her.
I have sent you the information. I think you will love the itinerary and Debra.

  6. Hi Elizabeth! I hope your knee heals rapidly. I was interested i both the London and Paris trips. I would like to hear more! Thank you.

  7. Wishing you a quick and full knee recovery. Trust me, the older you get, the more your body rebels!!

This time change business is for the birds and is wreaking havoc on me, as well.

    To your health!

    1. Catherine, thank you!
The time change seems to wreak havoc with us all. And yet, the country continues to change the clocks. It is so strange.
      Have wodnerful day.

  8. Dear Elizabeth,
Living in AZ we never change our clocks. I recall from past blog posts it’s something you dread.
Leave beautiful Carolyn Bassett alone. Horrible that the media stirs up gossip. I was raised on “if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.”
Oh no, sorry to hear about the inside of your knee. There is no lump or anything irregular feeling around your knee. I’m sure you know how to look after yourself.
    Take care.

    1. Katherine,

I did not know that Arizona did not change their clocks, I think Indiana is the same.
The Carolyn Bassett and JFK jr story irritates me, as I said every time their “love” story comes up there is a barrage of criticism, and rumor heaped upon her. I cannot imagine what she had to go through in her short 7 years being hunted like an animal every waking moment for a photo for the magazines. IT is sad.
      Have a lovely day!

  9. Wonder what could be wrong with your knee? Might be the meniscus. I did a deep squat in February and after could hardly bend my knee without pain. X-rays and MRI showed nothing wrong. It’s a mystery. Much better now. Seeing the PT this week to see if I did something wrong.

I so agree about time changes. It’s so silly. Fall is harder on me than spring. My grandparents had a farm in KS and never changed their clocks because the cows wanted to be milked at the same time every day.
I like you also dislike summer. They are so hot here in OK.

I had a bee in my garage today trying to go inside the holes on the side of our book cases where holes are drilled to change the shelf height. I need a bee box!!

    Take care of that knee.

    1. Nanci,

I hope that your knee is feeling better. Mine is still tender but doing better. I hope the PT can help you find the cause of your pain.
I can imagine the time change bing hard on your grandparents and their cows, that is a lot of work and a very hard career. Summer is so ht here and the humidity is the worst.
      Have a wonderful week.

  10. This week was rough! I am not a Winter person, but I would much rather have light in the morning than light in the evening. So, the time change is always hard for me. I am very much tied to sunrise for waking up and feeling human. I hope your knee is doing better. I have similar problems with mine just randomly feeling like it is “giving out” on me as I walk. No warning. Nothing leading up to it, but suddenly it will have shooting pain and feel like it is literally buckling under me. It will hurt for a bit and then go away. Getting old is weird. 🙂

    1. Thank you, my knee is feeling a lot better. Hopefully I will not have that problem again although I will not bet on it. I am sorry that you are having knee issues, be careful! I would hate for your to fall. I could not agree more, getting old is weird.
      Have a wonderful week!
