Monday Musings No. 236 | On the Eve of Fall, an Organ Concert and a Book About Books

Tomorrow at 8:04 pm it is officially fall, which my calendar and my ancestors have been waiting for all summer

Tomorrow at exactly 8:04 pm, it is fall. I will be waiting for it the way Charlie Brown waited for the Great Pumpkin. Faithfully, hopefully, and probably a little foolishly.

Sadly there will not be a miraculous drop in temperatures. They are going down slowly, nothing like the falls of my childhood or the images that flood social media every September. I know I live in the South. But my brain does not entirely recognize that. It is going by the calendar, and perhaps by my genes. I have generations of ancestors who were born and lived in the Midwest their entire lives. Or it could simply be that I am hot and very ready for cozy season. Probably all three.

This weekend was wonderfully lazy. Friday night, an organ concert, which was fascinating and beautiful. There is something about organ music in a chapel. Saturday was movie night, and Sunday a slow day of laundry and mail and my weekly call with my dad. I have a big week coming up, so the rest felt welcome. What about you, how was your weekend?

What I’m Reading

No Two Persons Erica Bauermeister book fall reading

This week I finished No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister one of my favorite authors.

Alice has always wanted to write. Her talent is real but her stories stay safe, held back, until a devastating event breaks her open and she writes a novel that surprises even herself. That novel then goes out into the world and finds its way to a handful of readers. A teenager hiding her homelessness, a free diver pushing himself past his limits, an artist furious at everything around her, a bookseller looking for love, a widower in the early days of grief. Each reader finds something entirely different inside Alice’s pages. Each one is changed by it in a way the others would never predict.

It is a book about how we read, how we bring ourselves to a story and take away something no one else could have found there. The kind of novel that makes you want to go back to a book you love and read it all over again with new eyes.

What I Watched

This week I watched Hannah Adkins one of my favorite YouTube channels and the perfect watch for the eve of fall. Hannah lives in the Cotswolds and she is a fellow fall lover, which is enough for me. This week she covers books, apple pie, life in the English countryside and all the things that make this season worth waiting for. If you have never watched her, this is a very good place to start.

Outfit of the Day

Fall brown and blue outfit fashion over 50

Brown and blue and one of my favorite Fall color combinations. This week I paired a cropped trench, with a white buttone down, a blue and brown striped sweater and brown accessories, including shoes and a bag.

  1. Elizabeth! I’m thrilled to finally welcome fall. While we’ve had a fairly mild summer (I feel for you), but fall is my favorite season. Time to get cozy. xo

I must say that I’m one of those that doesn’t really care for Fall…I know I’m in the minority, but I’m a Spring person…the longer the Spring season the better!! Mostly it’s the darkness and of course what is around the corner is the incessant cold and snow !! Up here in the Northern Central states Mother Nature can be a real bi@%h !!
Why is it that the month of May FLYS buy and January coasts by in slow motion?
I love hearing your passionate talks about Fall…but give me a cool wet garden with tender bulbs pushing up and sweet young birds (restricting your work because they have babies in the nest) anyway, now I have something to look forward to too as well.

    1. PJ, I would probably look forward to Spring/May if I still lived in the Midwest and winter was long, gray and ugly. I do not mind the darkness, or the snow but I do not like when it is cold, dirty, slushy, and icy. My mom says the same things about winter that you do.
I hope that your winter is not so long, and cold this year.
      Have a wonderful week.

  3. Elizabeth,
My book club read No Two Persons and we all loved it! I am in North Central Texas and the heat has been unrelenting The older I get the more the heat bothers me! I am so ready for cozy season!
