Rosy Quartz on my fingers, three OPI shades fighting for position on my toes, and the drugstore impulse buy I did not see coming.

There is a moment every spring — somewhere between the last cold morning and the first really warm afternoon — when I look down at my hands and think: it is time. The perfect time, really. The first day of spring has a way of making everything feel possible, including your nails. Time to remove the deep plum polish I have been wearing through the colder months and put on something that actually looks like April. A seasonal refresh. Something light and fresh, the softness of the season on my fingertips.

Like everything else in my life, I am a little set in my ways. What can I say — I know what I like. Pale pink on my fingers. Something bright on my toes. The combination is not complicated and it does not need to be. It works in March when I still have my winter-white skin and it works in July when I am coming in from the pool. Next to linen, it is the most constant thing about my spring and summer wardrobe.
The New Discovery
This year I did something a little unusual for me. I bought a new nail polish at the drugstore while picking up a prescription. It turned out to be the perfect shade for my fingers — neutral enough to go with everything I wear. Typically I stick to my usual favorites, a signature nail polish like a signature scent.
Sally Hansen Rosy Quartz. It is the palest, most natural-looking pink I have found in years. Not white, not sheer, not blush with the softest warm undertone. It’s the color of the inside of a shell. A semi-sheer finish with a barely-there subtle shimmer. On the nail it looks like you simply have very good skin and healthy nails. I wore it for the first time last week and I have already decided it is my new go-to polish.
If you tend toward pale pinks and you have not tried it, it is worth a stop at the drugstore. It is also affordable, which is always a good thing. I have had more expensive polishes and been disappointed by the chips that come after just a couple of days.
The Toes Are Another Story
My fingers want subtlety. My toes, apparently, do not.
This spring I am rotating between three OPI shades — I am indecisive and cannot choose just one. Pink Flamenco is the warm, vibrant pink I have been reaching for years, a popular pink nail color and honestly my favorite hot-pink variation in the OPI line. Strawberry Cosmo is a little deeper, a little more berry, a bit of red-pink, a rich rose that leans toward raspberry. No Turning Back From Pink-Edge is exactly what it sounds like.
I switch between them depending on my mood and what I am wearing that week. All three look fine against my winter-white April skin and all three will look even better once I spend a little more time at the pool.
What the Trends Say (And What I Actually Do)
Every spring the beauty editors release their lists of best spring nail colors — the trending spring nail colors that are supposed to define the season. This year the spring nail trends include milky nails, butter yellow, soft lavender, bright lavender, pretty peach hue, soft blue nails, and what one magazine described as a calming pistachio green. Nude nails and the classic french manicure are perennial favorites on every list — french tips never fully go away. Nature-inspired tones are having a moment. Aura nails keep showing up. There is always a soft blue-gray somewhere on the list. Spring nail inspiration, apparently, is everywhere the moment the longer days arrive and everything is in full bloom.
I find it interesting to know what is trending. I also know myself. Pistachio green is not happening. Neither is butter yellow. But milky nails, that barely-there, creamy pearlescent shade, is not so different from what I have been doing for years. Rosy Quartz is close to that trend which suits me fine. Just keep in mind that the best spring nail colors are the ones you will actually wear.
What I Look for in a Spring Polish
After years of experimentation I have landed on a few consistent preferences. On my fingers I want something that reads as polished but not flashy — pale pink, soft nude, the kind of color that works with everything from a white shirt to a linen dress. On my toes I want something colorful that looks great whether I am at the pool, the farmers market, or a summer dinner party on the porch.
Essie and OPI are my reliable favorites. Both brands do soft pinks and pink shades particularly well. Essie Ballet Slippers is the classic that has never let me down, a timeless nail color with a subtle glow that belongs in every collection. OPI Bubble Bath is another staple spring nail color, a barely-there nude that works beautifully with any summer outfit. Both are available in gel polish if that is your preference. A fresh coat of paint in either one is the simplest way to feel put together heading into the season.
Tell me in the comments — are you a pale pink fingernail person, or do you go brighter? And do your toes get their own color, or do you match? I am always curious whether other women do what I do or whether I am simply set in my ways.
