Weekend Meanderings

Good Saturday morning to you friends. It’s time for Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet. Join us as we share all of the things that piqued our interests and caught our eye this week.

It was a busy week on the blog, and at home. Admittedly, I spent a lot of time scrolling Instagram and the internet keeping up on the hurricane Helene disaster. As I have mentioned and shared, there are many opportunities to donate to help all of the people in NC, SC, GA, FL who have been impacted by this disaster.

Samaritans Purse and Jose Andres World Central Kitchen are two we donate too, of course if you know of local charities donate there as well.

Ok, let’s meander.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, this is a cause close to my heart. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 36, she will celebrate her 78th birthday on Sunday.

In case you missed it I shared a post all about the importance of self-testing, early detection and lots more. If you only read one post on the blog this month, please read this one ad make a note on your calendar to schedule your mammogram. I am getting mine on my birthday.

Chocolate loaf cake

This week, Ina Garten’s memoir is officially out and I can’t wait to read it. I also loved this conversation with her. If you are an Ina fan you might like to make her Outrageous Brownies or Banana Cake or this delicious triple chocolate bread which I shared Wednesday. The recipe makes 2 loafs, one for you and one to share.

Barn Coats collage.

Barn Coats are everywhere this season, I rounded up some of my favorites in case you want to add one to your closet this Fall or winter. I am pondering the plaid Barbour, although I am not sure that I need another coat.

Ok, lets’s meander.

Ann Carrington

I’ve been a fan of British artist Ann Carrington for years and was excited to see a story about her in this months Milieu Magazine.  Her tag line is “maker of sculptures and teller of stories.”

Ann works in many mediums, using mostly recycled materials including beer and soda cans, tuna and sardine cans and silverware to name just a few of the things used in her pieces.

I’ve shared Ann Carringtons’ work before but I thought I would share again as she has an exhibition in Nashville. There are 33 pieces at Cheekwood Estate & Garden. If you live in Nashville or you are close by, plan a visit to the gardens and the house to see her work. My favorite pieces are the giant charm bracelet and the fish.

To learn more about Ann and her work follow along on Instagram or her Website.

Foraged Wreaths

Barebones Gathering bag, plaid scarf and an orange hello fall cup.

Fall is a time when many people like to forage for mushrooms, berries, crab apples, fungi and more. But if you are like me and do not know enough about the food on offer in the wild woodlands I would stick to foraged fall decor.

You can whip up this Sweetgum ball wreath is less than 30 minutes, not including foraging for the pods. Michael of Inspired by Charm makes everything look easy and sometimes they are a little challenging, even I who and diy challenged cam make this.

Wendy is so incredibly creative and talented, I am always in awe of what comes out of her Sheshed. This foraged wreath made of sunflower heads, hydrangeas, sweet pods and other foraged grasses is not only easy to make but beautiful as well.

Shop the Post

Years ago my husband gave me a Barebones gathering bag and a set of clippers for my foraging exploits, I think he was tired of missing steak knives and ripped plastic bags. I keep the bag an a set of clippers in the car so that if I see some wildflowers, pinecones or any other weeds and twigs I can cut them down and carry them home.

Easy Fall Decorating

Don’ feel like foraging why not try this fun diy from Miss Mustard Seed, all you need is a tree branch, paper bags, glue and scissors.

And last but not least make sure to check out Juliets’ beautiful fall tablescape.

  1. Michael from Inspired By Charm is quite talented. I found several new blogs to follow thanks to this post. I did not know that about 23 and Me. That’s where I got my report. I’m ready for leaves fluttering to the ground and warm soup. Have a great weekend!

  2. Good morning, Elizabeth! Thanks for the shoutout of my fall table. How amazing about your mom … a cancer surviver thriving in her 70’s. Mammograms aren’t fun but they aren’t that bad either and the difference they make is truly a matter of life and death. Loved your barn coat roundup. I have one on my fall wish list and you’ve offered up so many great options to consider. Speaking of barn coats, Stacie Flinner was made for them. I enjoy her too, never more so than this time of year. On that note, I’m headed to the patio to emerge myself in Ina’s story and probably won’t come back inside until I’ve finished. Hopefully Jim brings food and water. Happy weekend. xo

  3. How sweet you are to mention our travel wardrobe posts, Elizabeth. Such a fun, newsy post! I just read to Howard the tip about the brown stem on apples.
Thanks for the reminder about Breast Cancer awareness. I need to make my mammogram appt. I also had breast cancer at 38.

  4. Elizabeth what a good post. First thank you for the reminder to get our mammograms . I just got mine . Thinking of your mom. So great she is a survivor.

I love your chocolate bread you shared and hope to try that! I can’t wait to read Ina’s book. I hope you splurge and get that plaid barn coat! You deserve it and we can never have too many coats. I love the ones you choose.

Some really pretty wreaths! I am inspired to try one! I and saving all of these. So cool you are a forager too. I do that in Tahoe all the time!

I need to give to World Kitchen. He is doing amazing work in the world. Truly a hero. Now we have to worry about the next hurricane. Hope you guys will be okay.
    Take care !
