FRIDAY FAVORITES NO. 631

Good morning friends! How was your week? This week has been crazy. Every day, there has been appointments for me, the dogs, then a friend came to town, another night we had dinner with friends. In between we worked and did the normal things around the house that one does to keep it running.

There will be no rest for the weary because tomorrow we clear out the 4 closets in the master bedroom so they can install the carpet on Monday. I had high hopes of purging while doing it but maybe I do that before I put is all back.

What about you? How was your week? What did you do? Are you having a cold spell? A heat wave? Crazy weather? Tell me all about it.

While you are at it, tell me something that made you smile or made you happy!

As always, I have lots to share so let’s get to all of our Friday Favorites!

BOOKS

Lately I have been reading a lot of WWII books. I am fascinated by the stories of survival, every day life in the time of war and the resistance. This week I found three that you might enjoy.

The Wartime Chocolate Maker

Poland, 1943. I inhale the rich caramel scent as I carefully tuck a folded slip of paper under the delicate chocolates. My heart races as the door opens, and I lock eyes with my childhood sweetheart. If he found one of the secret messages hidden in every box of my creations, my life and my family would be in terrible danger…

Working in her father’s chocolate factory, Kasia risks her life every day hiding notes vital to the Polish resistance in the carefully packaged boxes. The information tucked beneath the truffles is crucial to freeing her country and her family from the Nazis. But each of her recipes is sent out under the watchful eyes of her boss, Sebastian—the man who broke her heart.

She has never been able to reconcile the kind, sweet boy she once adored with the man now allied with the Germans. Yet the more time she spends around him, the more he seems to hint at sympathizing with the resistance. And the risk of revealing everything to him seems to shrink day by day.

Until one coded message hidden among the rich chocolate makes her fear for her mother and brother’s lives. And though she’s on the factory floor with a group of fellow resistance women, she can’t let on what she knows. Because her network has been betrayed.

As she searches the faces of those closest to her for any sign of guilt, her eyes meet Sebastian’s, full of care and concern. With time running out, Kasia wonders if she can trust him with this deadly secret? Or are the soldiers already on their way to arrest her?

My Father’s House

Inspired by a true story, My Father’s House is the extraordinary World War II account of a daring attempt to smuggle thousands of innocents through the Vatican and out of occupied Rome right under the noses of the city’s Nazi occupiers.

September 1943: German forces have Rome under their control. SS Commander Paul Hauptmann rules over the Eternal City with vicious efficiency. The war’s outcome is far from certain. Diplomats, refugees, Jews, and escaped Allied prisoners flee for protection into Vatican City, a neutral, independent state nestled in the city of Rome. A small band of unlikely friends led by a courageous Irish priest is drawn into deadly battle of wits with Hauptmann and his soldiers.

Suspenseful and beautifully written, My Father’s House tells an unforgettable story of love, faith, sacrifice, and courage.

Sisters in Science

The extraordinary true story of four women pioneers in physics during World War II and their daring escape out of Nazi Germany

In the 1930s, Germany was a hotbed of scientific thought. But after the Nazis took power, Jewish and female citizens were forced out of their academic positions. Hedwig Kohn, Lise Meitner, Hertha Sponer and Hildegard Stücklen were eminent in their fields, but they had no choice but to flee due to their Jewish ancestry or anti-Nazi sentiments.

Their harrowing journey out of Germany became a life-and-death situation that required Herculean efforts of friends and other prominent scientists. Lise fled to Sweden, where she made a groundbreaking discovery in nuclear physics, and the others fled to the United States, where they brought advanced physics to American universities. No matter their destination, each woman revolutionized the field of physics when all odds were stacked against them, galvanizing young women to do the same.

  1. Hi Elizabeth,
You have had a very busy week, you seem to handle it all so well. My heart goes out to you this weekend. To clean out four closets is a huge undertaking. Getting your new carpet installed will be such a great feeling.
We have had a hot spell in Phoenix.
What brings me smiles and happiness is visiting our rose garden and creating and arranging them in our containers. The other thing that brings me joy and happiness is sharing them with our neighbor friends.
I did not see the link for the triple cinnamon coffee cake.
    Have a lovely day.
