Friday Favorites No. 661

Good morning friends! Did you have a nice week? I had a busy but quiet week. Bill has been traveling this week so I worked on some projects around the house.

Aside from that just enjoying the beautiful weather. Unlike many, I relish “falling behind” when the clocks change, I love that it gets dark earlier. I am up and at it when the sun streams in the window and then cozy inside when the sun goes down. Reseting and resting after a long hot summer.

Hopefully you are not traveling this week or if you are the disruptions are minimal. The weather is also supposed to be a little crazy, a polar vortex already. Yikes, wrap up and stay warm.

What are your plans for the weekend? Mine are up in the air at this point so we shall see.

Ok, let’s get to it because I have lots to share.

The Artist and the Feast

During a scorching summer in 1920s Provence, a young journalist, Joseph Adelaide, turns up at the farmhouse of reclusive artist Edouard Tartuffe, hoping to write an article about him. There, he meets Ettie, Tartuffe’s niece, who appears to do everything for her uncle—from cooking and cleaning to catering to his maniacal moods. Joseph is beguiled by where he finds himself, not just by this foreign place or Tartuffe himself, but by Ettie, who watches everything so quietly from the periphery. Both Joseph and Ettie carry scars from their pasts and it’s as they get to know each other that they start to lay bare those scars to themselves and to each other.
As the summer wears on, and as new ideas and passions are explored, Joseph, Ettie, and Tartuffe are propelled toward a finale that reveals long-held secrets and sets the world on fire.

The Correspondant

Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime.

Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.

Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has—a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

Sybil Van Antwerp’s life of letters might be “a very small thing,” but she also might be one of the most memorable characters you will ever read.

SHOPPING~OUTFIT OF THE DAY

Black is classic and never goes out of style. This outfit is one of my favorites, the dress and jacket are vintage inspired and elegant. Simple silhouettes that can be worn together or with other pieces in your wardrobe. I added a brooch, they are “in” this season, some lipstick a bag and of course a pop of plaid!
