Make your home cozy, warm and comfortable for fall and winter with these 7 easy tips.

How to Make Your House Cozy This Fall
Good morning friends, the days are starting to cool here, don’t get me wrong I haven’t been wearing sweaters or coats yet but there is a distinct chill in the air as I take my morning walk. That has me thinking about getting my house ready for “cozy season.”
I strive to have a cozy house all year long, it is how I like to live. I want people to walk in and feel like the house has wrapped them in a cashmere throw and they feel cozy and comfortable, just as they do at their own house. In the fall and especially in the winter we all need a haven, a place to rest and rejuvenate, a respite from the cold and the harsh world.

When the weather outside is frightful a cozy home wraps around you like a hug. Creating a cozy, comforting house is easy in fact you probably have everything you need. If you don’t there are inexpensive easy ways to add cozy, warm touches to your home, today I am sharing 7 of them.
7 ways to make your house warm and cosy all fall and winter long.

1.Lights and Candles
Lamps
Once daylight savings rolls around it is dark at my house about 4:30. In fact on many winter or rainy days it really never gets light in the house.
The easiest way and frankly least expensive way to add a cosy ambiance is to turn on your lamps, it instantly changes the mood of the room. Often times people walk into a room and flip the switch which illuminates the room from above and creates a spotlight effect, more often than not, it is not very inviting.
Lamps on the other hand create soft pockets of light wherever they are. Our living/great room doesn’t have overhead lights, but it has 3 table lamps, and 2 standing lamps. In the morning when we wake up there is a soft glow coming from the room as we have a few of the lights on timers. We do that not only so that we can see but also to make the house warm and comfortable before we start the day.
If you your room doesn’t have enough lamps, why not add one this season? And a timer too. If you need a few tips on layering your lighting House & Garden has a few suggestions.
Candles
Is there anything better than the glow of a candle? It makes everything feel warm, romantic, and cozy, also a little “old fashioned.” Sometimes I light lots of candles or turn on the electric candles and read by the glow of the light.
I wouldn’t want to do it all the time but it is fun to imagine what it would be like to live like that. We light lots of candles, especially in the fall and winter.
The minute the temperature drops to 80 in the South we light our favorite pumpkin spice candles. Then of course the day after Thanksgiving out comes the balsam fir candles and cinnamon spice.
The scents are as calm, cozy and relaxing as the warm glow. They add fragrance and ambiance to any room in your home. In addition to that they help create the perfect hygge home. If you do not know what hygge is you can read all about it here.

2. Music
Turn off the tv, get away from the “noise” of life and let yourself relax with music.
You can make a playlist on your phone, use Alexa or even have access to over 2 million songs with your Prime membership.
I love all kinds of music, I grew up listening to ABBA, Styx, REO, Journey and Alternative music but typically I listen to classical music; especially violin or cello or Andrea Bocelli, Pavarotti and I especially love Gregorian chants.
The “sounds of the season” are also a favorite, I have no problem at all with stations starting to play holiday music the day after Thanksgiving or even before. After all is it “the most wonderful time of the year.”
Let the cares of the day fall away as you sing along or simply listen to your favorite music.
Youtube is another place to fins playlists for each season or mood. I like this classical one and this jazz.
3. Natural Elements

As you can tell by the name of this blog I love natural elements, especially pinecones and acorns.
Pinecones, acorns, seed pods, antlers, cotton and other found treasures are wonderful frugal finds from nature to decorate your house inside and out. The great news is that all you have to do is go out and find them.
Take a bag with you when you go for your daily walk and when you come across some pinecones and acorns scoop them up to take home and add them to your decor.
You can pile pinecones into a vintage or a favorite add a few leaves or pine sprigs and you have an easy seasonal arrangement. Or add cuttings from your trees, wildflowers or weeds to a vintage pitcher or vase and you have all of the colors of fall inside.
If you don’t have the time to forage Trader Joe’s always has beautiful and seasonable flowers that are reasonably prices. For easy flower arranging tips check out my friend Stephanie on Instagram, she created “My Pretend Flower Show” and it is always fun to see what she comes up with.
If you bring pinecones don’t forget to clean them before you add them to your decor or make an arrangement with them. You can read my easy tips for cleaning pinecones here.
4. Pillows, Throws, Flannel Sheets, Down Blankets and Quilts
Cozy up your bedroom by changing your cotton sheets for flannel, pull out your feather bed and then get out your . Add your grandmothers quilt to the end of the bed and you are ready not only for Fall but the cold winter nights ahead.

Add seasonalto your couch, chairs or wherever else you need a cozy pop of color. Change you pillows and pillow cases on your bed to flannel to keep you warmer. Spritz your pillow before bed so that you sleep better.
Then pull out all of your and drape them over the back of your chairs, pile them into a basket or fold them neatly on your ottoman so that when you or your guests feel a bit of a chill they are readily available.
I have been collecting vintage wool throws for years and I have baskets of them in the living room, the bedrooms and the library. I will be honest, although I love them I prefer to use my down throws, they are a little more comfortable and my dogs can sit on them as well.
If you need a Fall or Winter throw I shared several in this post.
5. Bath Salts, Comfy Towels and Self Care Items for the Bathrooms
Stock your bathroom with your favorite candles, bath salts, Epsom salts, bubble bath and fluffy towels. After a day out hiking, skiing, or playing in the snow a warm bath is the perfect way to warm up.
In addition it is alway a great way to wind down after a long day and drying off with a large plush towel definitely makes you feel more cosy and warm.
Get you Fall and winter pajamas and robe and keep them stored in the bathroom so that when you get out of the tub after a long relaxing soak all of your things are there.
Add candles, a few touches of seasonal decor and your bathroom is will be as comfortable as all the other rooms in your house.

6. Add Area Rugs and Fabric to Your Tables
Fend off cold toes by adding area rugs to your foyer, hallways, tile floors and bedside.will not only keeps your feet warm but will keep the ice and snow off of your floors. They also add another layer of coziness to your “nest.”
You can also add fabric to your tables to cozy them up; lengths of fabric, a large scarf or one of your tartan throws are a creative way to add a splash of color and character.
In the past I have layered two complimentary tartan throws on my farm table during the Fall and Winter. This year I am using some vintage tartan fabric that I found at the antique store.

7. Get into the kitchen
A pot of soup or chili simmering on the stove, a tray of cookies baking in the oven or the scent of steaming chocolate ready to be poured into mugs are the easiest and most delicious ways to cozy up your home.
They bring you together with the people you love most. After all the kitchen in the heart of the home, it is where you create memories while sharing your favorite comfort foods and drinks.
Do you like hot chocolate or cocoa? Make a batch of this homemade hot chocolate mix and you can having a steaming cup every morning.
