Weekend Meanderings No. 99 | Dorothy, The Dog, Kate Winslet and a Home That Tells a Story

Designer Sean Leffers collected home, an extraordinary film, life lessons~Weekend Meanderings with Kim and Juliet.

Helebores in the rain.

This morning I woke up early and sat by the fire until the sun came up. Then I snuck back into bed for a Saturday morning lie in with a book, a pile of magazines  and a cup of chocolate. It is my favorite way to start the weekend.

The weather has been chilly and rainy the last few days, in fact it was 33 one morning. The morning before I took it upon myself to give everything in the front beds a hard prune. I will never learn, false Spring gets me every year.

Last night we had a friend for cocktail and appetizers and tonight I will be doing the same with my sister. Today though is mine to do as I please. Juliet, Kim and I have lots to share. Let’s meander.

Short Film A friend of Dorthy.

This week I discovered two movies I think you will enjoy. The first A Friend of Dorothy, a short film about friendship. Dorothy, an elderly widow is living a quiet life in London. One day her young neighbor, JJ kicks a ball into her garden. Dorothy promises to give the ball back if her helps her with a chore, opening a jar of prunes. From there a friendship blossoms.

The second, The Dog, stars Kate Walsh from Grey’s Anatomy. Warning: If you have ever had a pet and had to put them down this film may bring back memories of that difficult time. I know it did for me. The Dog is about so much more than that, it is about the mental toll working as a veterinarian takes on doctors making end of life decisions for pets and caring for them as well.

I shared Fearne Cotton’s interview with Kate Winslet, not to be confused with Kate Walsh mentioned above, on Instagram a few weeks ago but I think it deserves a permanent spot on the blog. Kate Winslet is not only my favorite actress but she is wise, thoughtful, and a role model for women of all ages.

Every day we are bombarded with people telling us how to think, how to feel, how to dress, how to act. This short film, Walk Your Own Road is a reminder that YOU are your own person, you can think, feel, act, dress and do whatever you want to. The owner of you…is you.

And speaking of living life on your own terms, designer Sean Leffers shows us how to do just that. His house is a lesson in living and designing a house that tells your story, no more cookie cutter beige. This beautiful house is collected, lived in and each and every piece is meaningful to Sean and his family. It’s the kind of design every house should copy, not the things in it but the philosophy, create a home unique to you and fill it with things you love.

  3. Hi Elizabeth,
I am eager to watch A Friend of Dorothy. Once again you’ve shared content that I know I will enjoy. Unfortunately, when I click your link, I am told it requires permission. Am I the only one unable to view it?

    1. Debra, I apologize, when I posted the link last week it was available to watch. I do not know why it has been set to private. I will look into where else you can watch it. Have a lovely weekend.
