Every spring and summer I read the nail trend reports with mild curiosity and then go do exactly what I was already planning to do. Fall is the one season that actually changes my mind. As the weather cools and the new season arrives, the colors shift to burgundy and deep plum and chocolate brown and forest green, and those are colors I genuinely want to wear. Butter yellow is not happening here. But a moody plum in October? I am listening.
If you have been following along, you know I did this for spring and summer too. The formula has not changed much: pale and neutral on my fingers, something with personality on my toes. Fall just makes the toe color more interesting. I have been reading about fall nail colors and fall nail designs for 2026 and I have thoughts, which I will get to. But first, the colors.

What’s Happening in Fall Nail Colors 2026
The bright summer shades are going back in the drawer. The hot pinks and the corals and the bubblegum colors that belong at the pool. What comes out instead is the palette that makes fall the best nail season of the year. Earthy. Rich. A little moody. I have been looking forward to this since July.
Chocolate brown is the breakout shade of the fall season and honestly I am here for it. Brown nails have been building for a couple of years and this fall they have arrived in a way that feels like they are staying. The appeal is simple: warm undertones work on every skin tone, it looks lovely against a cozy sweater, and you can wear it to a Tuesday errand run or a Saturday dinner without changing your nails. A sophisticated look that requires almost no effort. If you have been hovering over a nude base wondering whether to go a little darker, this is your year. Mocha mousse is the softer version if a full chocolate brown feels like too much.
Deep burgundy is, as always, here. Burgundy nails never really leave fall. This year’s version has more plum in it than the straight red-wine of seasons past, which gives it a slightly cooler, more evening quality. It is the top choice at nail salons right now for the simple reason that it works for everything: short nails, long nails, every skin tone, any occasion. If you have never gone wrong with burgundy nails before, you will not go wrong now.
Ruby red is back with a high-gloss energy this fall season and worth considering if you find burgundy a little safe. A ruby red with warm undertones lands right between deep burgundy and a classic red, which makes it one of the most wearable fall nail colors of the season. It goes with everything and if you tell a nail tech that is what you want, you will not leave the chair disappointed.
Forest green is the fall nail color I keep seeing everywhere and I will admit it took me a while to come around to it. The version trending now is more woodsy than bright, a green that reads as a neutral against fall clothes rather than a statement. It sits beautifully next to camel, cream, leather jackets, and anything in your closet that is already the color of October. If you have not tried a green nail in the cooler months, this is the year’s version worth trying. Deep reds look stunning next to it if you want to try one color on each hand, which I would never do but some people do beautifully. Olive green is also in this fall, though forest green is the one getting the attention.
Moody plum and deep plum are for anyone who finds burgundy nails a little predictable this time of year but is not quite ready for green. Think of it as the middle ground: darker than a dusty rose or soft mauve, moodier than a standard nude, without the commitment of a full jewel tone. If you want fall nail colors with a little more personality than your usual neutral tones, this is where I would look. Deep plum works just as well for a casual Tuesday as it does for an evening out.
Warm metallics are worth knowing about if you want some shine this fall. Antique gold and earthy brown and spiced copper are showing up as accent details and full manicures both. They have the look of old gold jewelry rather than a chrome finish, which makes them much easier to wear and a lot more interesting than a standard glitter.
The Fall Nail Designs Worth Knowing About
I am a solid-color-on-a-clean-nail person. Always have been. Nail art is something I admire on other people and leave for other people. But I read about the fall nail designs that are trending this season and two of them actually gave me pause, which almost never happens.
Tortoiseshell is the most requested autumn nail design in salons right now and has been for a couple of seasons. Amber, warm brown, black, and gold layered on a nude base or burgundy base. It looks far more complicated than it is and happens to use every color the season is already wearing in the trees, which I find very pleasing. If you are looking for a fall nail art design that feels seasonally appropriate rather than just decorative, this is a good one to ask for by name.
The micro French tip is replacing the classic French manicure for women who love the traditional French tips but want something a little more current. Instead of the thicker white band, a very fine line in a contrasting shade, often deep burgundy or chocolate brown or gold, over a sheer blush or nude base. It works especially well on shorter nails like mine where traditional French tips can look a little heavy. This is the one I am actually considering.
Leopard print nails are back in a quieter form this fall, using warm tan, brown, and a muted gold in a different pattern that reads more like a texture than a graphic. On shorter nails this version is genuinely wearable for everyday wear. It is the first leopard print nail I have ever looked at and thought: I could actually do that but won’t.
Aura nails are crossing into fall nail territory this season and worth knowing about if you want to try something different. The effect is a soft blur of color around a neutral base that works in deep plum and warm gold. Ask for it by name at the salon.
Gold foil on a single ring finger adds enough warmth to make simple fall nails feel like a deliberate choice for a special occasion. A gold glitter accent nail does the same thing. Either one works without starting over entirely.
Matte finishes are having a significant moment this fall and are worth trying at least once. A matte topcoat over a deep burgundy or chocolate brown changes the whole feel of the color. If you go to a salon, ask what they have. You might be surprised.
The Three Shades I’m Actually Reaching For
My hands and my toes have different polish. My hands want something that disappears. My toes want to be noticed. Fall just means the toes finally get to be interesting.
For my hands: OPI Can’t Hardly Wait. A pale taupe that disappears into every outfit I own without making any effort. Polished and pulled-together without competing with anything, which in fall when everything in my wardrobe is getting richer and more layered is exactly what I need.
For my toes from September through December: Essie Bordeaux. A deep wine-red that is exactly what the name promises. I do my own toes on the bathroom floor and one of the dogs always decides that is the perfect moment to climb into my lap, so two easy coats matters more than I can say.
For anyone who can actually wear something dark on their hands and carry it off, I admire you: OPI Malaga Wine. It has been in the OPI line since 1989, which tells you how popular this shade is. A rich classic burgundy that works from early fall straight through winter without ever looking like it is trying too hard. If the chocolate brown moment is not for you but you still want to lean into the fall season, this is where I would start.
One more thing for anyone who does their own nails at home: Sally Hansen Cabernet. A deep red-burgundy that costs a fraction of OPI or Essie. For a color that is going on your toes and living in boots until February, there is no reason to spend more. Simple fall nails do not require a premium price point.
A Word About Topcoats
Whatever fall nail colors you choose, try a matte topcoat at least once this season. A matte finish over a deep burgundy or chocolate brown transforms the color in a way that is hard to describe until you see it. It goes from glossy and cheerful to something that looks like it came from a very good boutique. The simplest fall nails, a clean coat of Essie Bordeaux and a good topcoat, turn out to be some of the cutest fall nails you can wear. Fall is the season that makes this kind of attention feel worth it. The shift in light, the richer wardrobe, the way the whole world seems to slow down and warm up at the same time. A new nail color in September is a twelve-dollar luxury that lasts until Thanksgiving.
